Default does my timing look right please?

does my timing look right please?

I used mole grips to hold the passenger side cams and I lined up the marks on the belt but it looks not quite right.

yeh, them metal pulleys are crap, u can mess around for ages and ages, and never get them to line up. although, if you use a timing belt that has the timing marks on it, you will see that it is perfectly lined up and it's the pulleys.

im having the same problem on my 97 wrx ,the passenger side inlet is half a tooth to the right , rest pullys on the mark, does any one know how many teeth a 97 wrx jdm timing belt has,i bought a brand new belt (even though my other belt was new i convinced myself it was stretched) also upon torquing the cam wheels the drivers ex cam started slipping round?

did you take the mole grips off, before or after you released the tensioner pin ?

to hold the bacolite pulleys? if it slips round under torque wrench pressure would it not slip under acceleration , i tried torquing the nut up after i turned the crank a few time to check the timing was still lined up, can you put a pic up of said tool? ive got a garage full of random stuff and tools can prob make something up

Don't forget, every time the heads or block has been skimmed... Different thickness head gaskets will all move the marks off slightly.

Good point, bearing that in mind would it be better to set up the passenger inlet cam wheel just before or after the line,I've just got to do the timing belt and put clutch on and my engines ready to be fitted,

early cars were all steel, then around 95 they changed to all plastic, and changed again at 99 to 3 plastic / 1 steel

newer cars with AVCS have steel upper and plastic lower pulleys (or all steel on dual AVCS hatch, etc.)

It is possible to get them bang on with a lot of fiddling. Took me a while to get it right with a lot of swearing. That was without locking the cams up too.

just done mine a few weeks ago and it was half a tooth out on the right hand inlet cam. Messed around with it for ages and thats the best i could get, runs with no problems at all. Seems to be like that with everyones.

I tried to hold the right hand cams together with mole grips to stop them spinning when you take the belt off , big mistake with plastic ones, only gave it a little squeeze . Luckily i could pinch a new one off a spare engine

As ken says head or blocking skimming will effect where the marks sit as is effectively shortens the distance between the heads all be it by a tiny amount

Sorry for late reply guys, been doing the belt ended up having a mechanic friend come and help because I didn't trust myself we go it on, top passenger pully just to the right, annoying thing for me was I bought a brand new belt at the tune or 87£, atleast I know it's had a brand new belt
I found this thread very informative, I knackered a tensioner aswell I guess by vicing it up to quickly, so if anyone else is looking for tips take your time doing that, Yea the bakolite pulleys aren't the strongest, I clamped 2 together with molegirps on my blown longblock and Yea snapped the pulley,
Can the older style metal pulleys be fitted to a engine that should have all plastic pulleys? Would the fit, would it need a different belt and the other type tensioner? Thanks again guys all the advice and answers

what a weekend! fired up my rebuild sat night and it was knocking its bag off, then dropped one cylinder. I suspected the worse and went to bed. didn't sleep very well. so Had a look again with a fresh head this morning. a coil pack connector had come loose so that fixed the cylinder. the knocking was from the cam belt tensioner. turns out there is a sleeve in the tensioner pulley! id pinched a pulley off another engine and the sleeve was missing. it had worked great when id checked it and when the engine was not running. but as soon as the engine was running the belt was flapping around like a good un. so much that it jumped a tooth. I timed it up again and replaced the pully and she purrs like a kitten.
putting the belt on is much harder on the car!

I'm not sure didn't sound right I'm not touching it lol Il leave it to mechanic, saying that I'd didn't sound anything like my old engine that was knocking and tapping and popping, primed the feul for ages it wouldn't start found that the feul inlet pipe was twisted and had a kink sorted that out it, started on the button after a second of turning over, then turned it off after about 5 seconds, got pissed off packed everything up and had a smoke and txt my mechanic waiting on a reply saying when he can come and have a look

mine smoked like a ******* after. it was juts oil on the manfolds from dirty hands and spills.
did you build oil pressure first?
I don't know how my engine sounded for the first few seconds as the pulley was knocking that loud. think I had some whine also from a twisted ac belt pulley.
its taken a long time and ive kinda had to rush it in between caring for my 2 year son.

Yea built the oil pressure, sounds like we're in the same boat taken me roughly 2.5/3 month to strip engine gear box and diff from new cars , remove gearbox and diff from my old car, fit gearbox diff prop rollbar links, shafts, steering rack and engine to next car, still got body work to sort out when it's running properly, juggling a 2 and half year old and 1 year old (both boys)and a moaning Mrs lol
