1988 Subaru XT Turbo Project
A Big Thanks so far to Si and David @ API and Sha, Jez & Matty @ Pole Position, how greatful i am for your input and help with loaning stuff.
Here We Go !!!
Back in 2011 I purchased a 1988 Subaru XT Turbo.
I owned one of these in 1986 for about two years, at the time apparently there were only 400 imported to the UK, I sold it and Bought an Audi Quattro and many other cars along the way, but there was always that itch that I still wanted another XT, some say there one ugly car in fact most say they are, I would agree to a certain degree but there just different, typical 80’s styling, I managed to Buy two one on the road the other not, the road one eventually went to Ireland, the guy flew over and drove it back, mad idea, there it still is, the non runner I weighed it in, and now I have this one in a very sorry state, the XT was one of the first cars to Run an ECU and it was Subaru’s first jump into the domestic market having made Pickups for many years, the XT stopped in 1991 where the SVX took over, this was a flop and then came along the Impreza. So that’s a very brief bit of History.
Any way, I’ve been encouraged to start this thread because if I leave it till the end I wont be arsed.
Plans for the XT:
Strip down to bare shell
Weld all the necessary
Ej20 Sti engine
6-speed box
FMIC
Brembo’s
Roll cage
Newage loom and JDM ecu with Carbery Rom
Rally graphics
Etc
The car will weight approximately 800kg so I’m expecting a very quick car.
Here's a load of pics to start off as you can see its in a bad way, its going to be a long project with work commitments.
It Needed a home, a Unit was out of the question with costs so i went to work and built a make shift building all be it out of timber its worked out OK.
He's not confused.
And there you have it, water tight and ready.
Let the work begin.
EA82 Engine out, so Old school it has a dizzy cap.
more pictures to follow with a better camera.

Brilliant matey! These are getting very few and far between now! Good to see one being brought back from the brink!
What are your plans for the old running gear? Particularly interested in the rear LSD? but would be keen to have the hole shebang if its going to waste!
My brat is begging for a turbo and this would by far be the easyest way!

this is a great thread mark, i didnt realise there was a bit of history behind you getting the xt. so how many are in the uk now, is it just yours?
by the time you finish the project, will be a great magazine article, probably get it in a few magazines, classic sports cars, big exposures, especially if subaru have a birthday coming up at some point and want to showcase historic models.

This is going it be a great thread
I will have. Look through my old car brochure collection from the 70/80s to see if I have a brochure on it
It was a futuristic car for its time when it came out from a manufacturer of pickups ,my parents used to own a 78 T one and we got shot of it after 100 k hard miles
Going to enjoy reading this thread and look forward to seeing it at NBO 11
Even in a trailer I don't mind

Wow, i have never seen one of these before!
Nice to see something slightly different being restored on here - you should post a thread up on the retro rides forum too if you haven't already.
I look forward to following this one.
