Default Vw corrado vr6 or clio williams

Hi all,

I own a 330d sport which i use as my daily drive and i have always had a second car for a bit of a weekend blast and at the mo i'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I have always had a hankering for a clio williams and currently own a very sorted corrado vr6 (my third) which has had it's engine rebuilt and bored out at stealth racing, (rroaded at 198bhp/192lbft at 3000 miles after its run in) 30-70 in 5.2 secs, koni ta's with h&r springs, new bushes all round and with the bmc cda carbon fibre intake makes an awesome noise too, these are great quick cars in the right hands and sound great

But i just can't get the williams out of my head!

So what should i do? go scratch the ***** itch?! or keep the vr howl?

I've owned a couple of clio 1.8 16v's in the past and one was cammed and mapped which was great fun and if we were comparing a standard williams to a corrado vr6 then i reckon the ***** would win but with the koni/h&r's i have on mine i reckon it would be a close call

Here's a not very good pic of my vr

Get a Williams I had a Williams 2 nine years ago and loved it. I ended up selling it on 138k and it was a dream to drive. Thinking back I loved the idea of a small car with 2.0 Williams Engine but it was exactly fast

If I was going to get a other one I would want a mint one to restore.

How about a 5gt turbo that s the most fun car I have ever had. Or a Clio v6?

I've had an my99 prodrive spec classic, 300bhp, anti lift, uprated rear drop links, fast as f*#k but is it really all about straight line speed?? I love the noise the vr makes and it's delivery so it's a tough call! oh also had s4's etc

hard call imo for long runs the vr6 but if just for local playing then prob the clio. as you say i love the vr engine nice and lazy with a very good soundtrack, but juicy and not as good as the clio for back road bashing with its go-cart handerling.

Clio all day long for me.

Better handling, better economy, cooler and you don't have to put up with the vw scene.

I've had 39mpg out of an vr6, so I think mpg would be a close call to tbh.

And that's the thing with clio it weighs peanuts so is great fun at low speeds, I loved ragging my old 205 round the back lanes! but then the corrado with the koni's set to firm handles like a go cart as well? but sounds awesome when hoofing it.

And tbh a classic impreza with the right mods is a great car, I really do miss my old one but I'm finding the image thing quite hard to live with, there are so many of them around, and so many chavved up ones to.
But every now and again I still the old boy round my way that used to rally them and he still drives a uk classic, so perhaps I should t care what people think!

What else is there for 2k that's great fun, fast, and a 36yr old can get away with driving everywhere, little boy in the back the lot on a weekend blast?

They are out there for 2K, but it's just something about older cars i like, i think it's the weight, modern ish cars are soo heavy these which in my view makes them less fun, obviously there are cracking expensive heavy cars out there but small lightwieght cars like the 205's and clio williams will never be made again will they due to all the crash regs and the like?

have you thought about a 306 gti6? more of a grown up saxo vts.
Also as above a clio 172 sport are very capable cars, and surprisingly good on fuel,
vr6 are underpowered and thirsty for what they are

tbh i'm amazed you got/get that mpg from your vr6 i had a 4motion and never got that above 32 and that was on a long motorway run, my avrage was round the 24 mpg.
cheap fun car well as above the 306 gti6 are good and if you want smaller the 206 gti 180 can be had very cheap now, i got 2 of them just for local work and love them but normal french cheap and they do have faults but good fun to drive. i picked up a 05 one with 42k on it for under 2k.

Yeah well aware of how good the 306 gti-6 is but it's never really popped up on my radar, integra type r also v very good! it's like the corrado vr6, my mates dad had one when i was 22, (36 now), and all i remember is him taking me out in it and the noise, speed always stayed with me!
I had a great drive in mine too at the weekend, i think it's definatly one of those cars that until u've owned/driven one in anger at 10 tenths, then they probably seem at a bit crap, i've had three now as well as a wealth of all different performance cars, but i keep coming back and they are great cars and better now you see hardly any on the road.
And i cant see the the williams being amazingly different to the 1.8 16v other than the wider track and the more sorted suspension? maybe i'm hugely wrong but i definatly love the look of the williams and the early mk1's with the numbered plaque.
Oh and the mk4 2.8 4 motion is renown for being thirsty but i'm definatly not lying when i achieved 39 mpg out of my old vr! I've people getting 40 plus out of them!

I used to have a silver VR6, awesome cars, handle very well on decent suspension and uprated bushes and the sound they make with an induction kit ... sublime!

But, if you've had a few you know this and I can understand the desire to try something new. I can imagine the Clio feeling a bit flimsy in comparison, but it's a different kind of car and think get something different from it, probably more fun day to day as you'll be able to enjoy the handling at slower speeds than you can in the vr6

yeah there are a few on there with s/c or turbos fitted its not too bad a job to do tbh. best person to speak to would be paul parky on there as he has done quite a few s/c and turbo fits on them.

One thing that put me off the Williams is a comment that the misses made, 'yeah but it's got gold wheels you'll look like a chav!'
Which is a fair point, petrol heads know the Williams as an awesome iconic car whereas the corrado vr6 has always had very good praise but I find a lot of people who slate them have never properly driven one!
And my corrado vr6 I think does look dated but also quite exclusive and has its own character in the looks department.
Still undecided.... schimmel 263 cams would turn my vr6 into a sweet na monster too

I always had a hankering for a Williams mk1 but if it had ever been a toss up between getting rid of my old Golf VR6 (pictured below) or keeping it, I would have kept it!
You just cant beat that VR noise and after cams, a remap, straight through exhaust and filter mine was pushing out 229bhp!! It put down 206bhp with just the exhaust on at a vr6oc rolling road day! (Top BHP of the day!)
Combine the above with Porsche Boxter S brakes, braided hoses, Koni coilovers, a rebuilt gearbox with a quaife diff and you had one amazingly planted and rapid car!
If I was to ever have the choice of buying another VR or a Williams it would have to be a VR!

Car on VR6oc RR shoot out (1min10 is when things start to get loud lol!)

I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think, they're not driving it... who cares if someone you've never met thinks you're a chav? But, I think if it were me I'd add a S/C to the VR6.

Heres my old one...

That's the kind feedback I'm after guys! it's making want to keep the rado:-)
And oliver6 that is a very sorted golf, and I've had alot of turbo charged cars now, there's something about a tuned na engine that is v very nice, (my friends v10 m5 is very nice for sure!)
Nice vr there hill79, you don't see many silver ones? These just something about the rado that I really love, maybe I should buy a Williams and keep the rado!
It would be a shame to sell my corrado as the stealth rebuilt engine is a peach, cost £4k and has only done 75,000, has the mahle overbored pistons too so it's a true 2.9, it's had everything done to it that I wanted to do to my old one:-)
And I'm not really bothered about what people think, I'm just trying to find excuses to keep the vr!

Cheers mate. Unfortunately the rust bug got to it after storing it at my fathers farm (ammonia from chicken sh*t!). Ended up part ex'ing it for the scooby for a grand
Would have been worth more breaking obviously but I didn't have the time, space or patients - I wanted my scooby NOW!! lol!
I would definitely keep the 'rado if I was you mate but I'm biased obviously!

Nice clip too, sounds wicked, even over the fan!
I've got the Bmc CDA carbon intake on mine and a magnex cat back exhaust, I have a stainless six branch to go on as well, they do sou d good don't they:-)
That's the thing, the engine does dominate the car a gives it a lot of character, and will the clio be as quick?... I don't think so.
I sold a 1.8 16v to my brother that was very quick with cams etc, would rev to 8500 rpm and I was very surprised to see it stuck to my old vr6 in a comparison test, no weight to the though I suppose
