Default BMW 540i Reviews

Hi all

So some of you know, im going to park the subaru up for maybe a good 6 months to a year while i get a few bits and bobs sorted on it such as body work, 6 speed gearbox and so on. Now ill be on the bike getting to and from work so the bmw would only be used every other weekend as well as the odd long trip up north.

Has anyone had any experience with these bmws. Whats the running costs like i.e servicing, brake pad changes, suspension and so on

Im only intending to keep the bmw for 18 months or so while i get my subaru fixed up

Leave your reviews/thoughts below please friends

Thanks

i had a e39 530i m sport not quite the 540i but mine was the sport awsome cars juicy mind i was getting 19mpg that was booting it everywhere i had struts 19 inch alloys handled very well i would nt take the traction control off tho very tail happy and the chew back tires for fun

i found them easy to service and repair well designed but big lumps so space is limited
they also have problem with
maf
coils
but i done 0ver 40k in 3 years booting it everywhere
expansion bottle blew due to water pump gone so i change myself with thermostat very easy i thought

on a run up the motor way that where there best just cruises luxury

Cheers for that mate. Ive always liked the big german cars. The fuel aint too much of a problem as it wont get used everyday. They dont sound too hard too work on from what ive read

Many prefer the 530i due to rack and pinion steering, lower weight, fewer reliability niggles, overall not much loss of performance and better economy. I understand that the six got upgraded through the E39 (+40 BHP between 528i and 530i for example, 525i output matching the previous 528i) cycle whereas the eight got its major upgrade of about 50 BHP with the E60 (after the same in the early noughties 7 series).

Make sure you read the interwebz on the common E39 issues, they are well documented.

Great cars.

I have had a good few BMW's over the years,but not a 540i I have to admit.

I have always found them to be of a particularly good build quality, they all handled well, and were reliable too.

My uncle had a 740i from new a while back - lovely engine and must make a 5 series move very nicely.
