Default 2004 Audi A4 Avant 1.8T - opinions?

Bit of a slow day finds me flicking through the classifieds and I'm quite liking the above car. Particularly the 6 speed manual and the S Line (although some seem to be GMBH?)

Some ads say insurance group 15 some say 17. Some ads have the MPG from 30 to 40 on a run - mid 30s will be great for me. Theres a saloon local to me so may see if I can arrange a viewing to see what its like.

Anyone have any previous with one of these?

Re the insurance - do they do two different BHP outputs on this model? I am currently looking for a Saab and the model i am after is available in 175+210BHP this might account for the differences in the insurance

Its the 190 brake 6 speed S Line

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...1501?logcode=p

This says group 15 but other places say 17. Will get a quick quote just now.

Really fancy one of these. Think petrol will be best for me. I don't think I do enough miles for diesel - say 15K a year. The 1.8T seems to be able to do mid 30s on a run which will suit me (My Jeep does 23 at best right!)

Currently i am doing around 10k miles and the petrol seems like the best option for me too!

Odd how insurance companies rate the car at different levels for the exact same car.

Would love RS4. I could buy an S4 but the running costs are just too steep. Insurance and fuel is one thing but bills appear to be eyewatering!

The 1.8T seems like a good idea to me. Not too steep to insure, no complicated diesel gubbins to go wrong.

Looking at B6 shape A4. Mother has a B7 which is nice but hers the 140 diesel auto which is nice but a bit boring.

When i was looking into these the guys on the audi forums said that the 18t was a much safer bet than the diesel 19 as the running costs can get silly if things go wrong, thus off setting any small fuel saving, and as you guys say if your not doing the miles there is no point taking the chance.

But i do prefer the roomier passat which can be had for similar money and uses the A6 platform.

the 1.8t are a good nippy car and a popular engine that audi made. diesel prices are shocking these days.
my motto is if u look after ur car it will look after you.
as for the rs4, i would take it to independant specialist as dealers at audi ripp u off, also the rs4 on insurance comes in £20 cheaper than my impreza waggon and the mpg wont be much diffrent to my impreza too. so its just the road tax ill have to fork out for £400+

mine had a weaping gearbox gasket, fine send it to the garage to be sorted then... got to the garage and went to book it in, its going to be about £1500 to sort that mate, apparantly a common issue and unless you can do it yourself expect to pay that much lol. luckily for me a mate did mine in the end. I was getting about 25 mpg, insurance was more than the impreza which id just had before (through gary), on the plus a nice car loads of space comfortable and quite nippy, but not fast by a long shot.

in the end it started leaking from the gearbox again so put it on ebay £1 start it sold for £2200 with me being 100% honest.

Love A4 Avants. So many variant outputs on the 1.8T though

Had an A4 with 1.8T quattro but it was only 163bhp.Before that, old shape with 1.8T which I think was only 150bhp!

swapped 163 one for a Skoda Octavia vRS.Same 1.8T but 180 bhp.Felt a lot nippier! Rubbish inside compared to the Audi though (not true of the new Skoda vRS,lovely cabin)

I'd have a nose at the Octavia estates too...2006 on I think for new one.Not sure

must say we had a vrs 03 plate and to be honest it was a great car very good handling for a 5dr saloon sticked like glue. just a bit underpowered for my taste but great car
the newer one looks a lot nicer inside/out.

Think I'm fairly sold on the Avant.

However, one thing that bothers me is that the 1.8 190 BHP Quattro emissions is 226g/km but being 2004 its put in band K and £260 road tax. There is some suggestion that this was only supposed to be temporary and that they might go up to £400+ or whatever it is and I refuse to pay that sort of money for road tax - no matter how rich I was I would spit blood!

the road tax rises only went up from early 2006 onwards thats why i bought a 55 plate to bypass it.
