Default S4 as a daily drive?

Hi all, I've been looking at an S4 estate for work and throwing the mountain bike in the back, either 01 reg or 04. I don't know to much about them at all to be honest other than early models had the V6 twin turbo and the later ones have a 4.2 V8. I prefer the older shape if I'm honest, nicer front end imo.

Has anyone ever owned one? Good points? Bad points?

Cheers

Thirsty and expensive to fix.

If you accept that then I think they are fine cars. I tested a 1999 S4 and found it quite quick but a bit woolly.

The chap who had the zt now has an S4 convertible 4.2 which is his daily driver, 6 months on and no issues - he loves it!

BORING cars for BORING people!!!!!

"S4 convertible 4.2 which is his daily driver"

"his" and "s4 convertable" .... not two words you usually see in a sentence without "wifes" in between them!

In case you hadnt guessed im not an audi fan! I work for a car company that is part of vw audi group so i get alot of access to VW's audis seats skodas .... and they all feel the same! soulless uninspirational over rated euro boxes for "a to b" mentality drivers.

Does make me appreciate the scoob all the more every time i get in that instead though!

Legacys are very good at getting mtbs thrown in the back of them, and the drive to the trails will be alot more enjoyable!

I take your point legacy gtb, especially as you have a lot of access to them. To be honest I never really thought of getting a Scoob estate. Although if I did I can see myself going down the modding route with it, which isn't what I want to do really.

I guess what I really want is, an estate, something not to sluggish, comfy on long journeys and not to cost the earth to keep. I'm describing a legacy arent I?!

Whats your budget? im guessing from the options of eurobarge your talking £4k+???

If that budget can stretch a bit then this is a goodun!

A few months ago you would have got a Fsti for about £8k! Prices seem to be a bit high at the moment.

Theyre awesome cars, ej257, the holy grail hi ratio 6 speed, brembos ..... good car!

One thing to consider though fella, my legacy can take two DH bikes without taking wheels off, the foresters that little bit shorter and needs wheels out.

I had a 4.2 V8 - 56 plate S4

Loved the car the build quality and the sound of the V8

But was getting around 17-20 mpg trundling around, and very low 10's when driving more enthusiastically.

Now have the 3.0 TDi V6 A4 Avant and love it, still great to drive, still plenty of power but gives me 35-40 mpg.

I had an S4 Avant (biturbo V6 thing) - I'll agree that whilst it was relatively pacey in a straight-line, it was a bit boring.

Bit of a harsh comment about the owners though eh? Most of the S4 owners I knew were heavily into modding and had a lot of MRC-tuned monster-spec cars.

These have got huge boots...

and whats more just flick a little switch at the side of the boot space and the rear seats throw themselves forward - it's quite funny to watch!

Go on stay Scooby - you know you want to...

Good work OP, I was just about to post the same question, for the same reasons with the same budget! Fancy a car share scheme?

Ive looked around for a while and 8k will get an early high miler B7 (05) or a nicer less leggy B6 (03 - 04). Really tempted and not read as many horror stories as I was expecting re big bills although not kidding myself. The insurance isnt too bad either (200 quid lower than my STI was).

Just not sure if I can live with mid/early teens MPG....

Have you looked at 3 Series 330i's? You can just about pick up an E90 for 8k. Or a very nice E46....

Yeah poked about a few 330d's but still keep getting drawn back to the S4. Saying that I have recently been looking at legacy's, mostly 04ish, although I'm pretty sure the mpg is just as bad as my wrx.

Statement about audi drivers generally being boring..... bit harsh by me, sorry. Stand by the statement audis themselves are though!

Nice leggy Mick!

Yes they can drink like any subaru does.... tis worth it though! :-)
