Default Clio 172

Mrs has been bugging me for a few weeks now about getting her a car. So today a friend is selling her Clio 172 sport so I'm pretty interested in it for her, it's a good price, reasonable mileage, serviced etc.

Questions for you all are,
Is this a good run about for her? Any common faults on these? Anyone had one...etc
Cheers

Had one and put 20k on it. Make sure it's had a cambelt as that is a £500 job.
I got 34mpg out of it but didn't really give it a hard time. I found it quite flat and had to be worked to get it to go. Whenever i had the option, i took my Wife's Fabia VRS to work instead of the Clio as screwing a car ain't my thing.
If it's just a run about i would steer clear of a Ins Grp 16 car tbh

....just to add, the car had around 60k miles when i sold it and had been in my family since 10k miles. In all that time there was never any real problems with it in the way of reliability and squeeks and rattles. There will be people along soon who will tell you they all drop to bits if they look at them in the wrong way

Ive had 2 of these little rockets and can honestly say their the most fun cars ever! You get a power kick at 4500rpm and When driven properly will kick the **** off most hot hatches on the road inc the Civic Type R, Golf GTI's and dare I say it....alot of Scoobs on a bendy road!

Make sure the aux and cam belts have been done, it's about 6-700 smackers otherwise

Good cars, fun, fast and dirt cheap at the mo

I was looking at focus's for a while but they all seem to have massive mileage for the price I'm budgeting.
When I heard about this I knew the mrs would like it, but yeah agree the group 16 isn't ideal but gonna get a quote on a multi-car with the scoob tomorrow.

The cam belt has been done but unsure about the aux belt? Is this something that's generally done at the same service?

Maybe the case for a 1.2, but on the two litre the space makes it a relatively tricky job. Its around £350 at a specialist.

I've owned 2x172 and a 182. Ideal as a runabout if you want to drive hard occasion, yet will be easy enough for the mrs to drive around. My ph1 172 was by far my favourite and the best built. You do get what you pay for so well worth getting a decent one.

from memory Your are looking at dropping the drivers side strut out to get access + removing and engine mount, etc also i think the water pump is driven from the cam belt and is best changed at the same time.

If the cambelt has been done by Renault or a specialist, the aux belt and tensioners should have been done at the same time as the aux belt has to come off to replace the cam belt. The 172 are fully loaded as standard including climate, xenons, auto wipers and lights, etc, the mechanical parts and engine are pretty robust and reliable, goes like stink and pretty easy going on the juice, whats not to like!

Mine did exactly that. Was at the Dealers more times than I can remember.

The one car I couldn't wait to get rid of.

I had 2 172's. Loved them and am planning to get a phase 1 as a track car next year.
I didn't have any major problems with mine apart from the stereo breaking.
Great fun to drive. Not the most comfortable ride as the suspension is reasonably tough. And the driving position is total crap for anyone over 5 foot. I replaced my seats with aftermarket ones though as I am 6'5".

An't you got an impreza sport? As far as beating a civic type r, a 172 wouldn't stand a chance and a 182 would just be able to keep up lol, even Tiff can prove it for you.

lol what ? It would just about keep with a CTR nevermind an impreza.

They are good cars, niggly faults and cramped interior but good fun

Hi, just to clarify, a 172 is the same speed as a 182. Well certainly in a straight line anyway as I tested this in my 172.
