Rotor tips failing are big big big common problem. Quote normal for them to go every 30-50k. So make sure they have been done or have another £3000 put aside to have engine rebuilt.
I also believe that if there are any issues with boost pressure, walk away, as tracing the problem in the 'rats nest' as they call it can be a nightmare.
All that said, when I took one for a test drive 6 or 7 years ago whilst deciding on which rice rocket to go for, I was very impressed with how it drove. Feels like a little race car.
I also think that the RX7 is the best looking 90's sports car to come out of japan.
Be prepared for 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles and 15mpg everywhere though.

Rather you than me mate - engines are made of chocolate! You will need exta deep pockets fella. Was a thread about these a few months ago, personal experiences etc.. Put me right off 'em - I was concidering one myself a year or so ago, glad I didn't to be honest. 3-4 grand engine builds, and not even getting 10,000 miles out of it before it went again - or something to that tune anyway!

I think on the old 80's and 90's one, generally only the top plugs got changed as no one could ever reach the bottom one, you needed a special mazda tool. hence really prone to poor servicing.

Yep, had one and loved it. See if they have cylinder pressure test evidence. Check it hasn't got water leeks or loosing water as this can also be sigh of engine failure. Ask owner if it has ever flooded or floods regular. They flood Moore when engine worn. Apart from that, top cars. Great to drive very very sideways!

Best to avoid it if you think you need deep pockets to scoobys then you'll need even deeper one's too own a rex any rex for that matter! ive had the type r, stupid fast stupid (fun backend) stupid running costs stupid breaking every other week!!! Also had a jdm rx8 210 which to fare was fun but it always felt like something was going to give ;( as said rota tips are a nightmare oil starvation is another you have to top the oil up as much as you top up with petrol. It really is a joke granted they are fun they do look mint and they are fast but i WOULD NEVER go back!!!! Ever ever eeeevvvveeeerrrrrr...

I just hated it mate!( and i really wanted one for a few years ive had japs since i could drive from pulsars (equal trouble) was 400bhp though, evo's 2,3,4,5 and about 12 scoobys plus the odd civic type r and it just really made me feel like fooking japs off for good then i got a scooby again and hehe here i am. Even my twin turbo 300zx was more reliable.

Thanks for the info lads!!!
Ive done some research, and the car im viewing has just had a compression test done, which come back with 7.5's on front rotor and 8's on the rear rotor, and im aware they go through quite a bit of oil etc and bad on petrol.
I understand there not the most reliable car in the world, But Its kind of expected with nearly 18 year old sports car, but as a second car and with a few stage 1 mods, would it really be that unreliable!!!!

Maybe I was lucky but I had one for about 4 months, and loved it. Bloody quick considering it only had and Apexi ECU, and non sequential turbo mod. Proper sports car that sounded glorious. They are loud, large and in ya face.
This was my old one.

I had a thundering quick pulsar too. Never went wrong. That was an awesome car. Mate had 400bhp pulsar that was never right. My pulsar was probably the favourite from all my jap cars.

They are lovely cars, the downside is that there aren't many RX7 specialists in the UK, the only one that comes to mind is Dragon Performance.
My mate had one for quite a few years, it was a fast car but it should definitely be kept as a "used once in a while" kind of car.
As said, the tips usually require replacing around the 40k mark so keep an eye out for that one, also make sure it's been undersealed, I remember when looking for my mates, everyone we found hadn't been undersealed so it's worth poking your head underneath with a torch.

You must be very unlucky mate. My RX was general ok. Only cos I kept taking it apart to make it go faster that it was off the road. Never failed an mot and didn't need an engine. Maybe I got rid of it just in time though as guy who bought mine crashed it within the week, got it all fixed
and sold it on. Owner after that blew it up. Lol.

Yeah I know what you mean, Ive never had any problems with any of my scoobys Ive owned, But had quite a bit of trouble with the Evo's Ive owned(Broke a couple of driveshafts, and fuel pump on my evo VI RS in the first couple of days) and had a few problems with my Evo VII. So I always tell people not tobother with Evo's as my own experiences have been bad with them.

The Conversion I would love to own and see down is a RX7 engine and running gear into a MX5. A stock MX5 is geared to short and too slow. The small powerfull light weight engine of an RX7 is a perfect match for a MX5.
350+bhp rwd in a MX5 =
