Default Which diesel fuel?

I have a suspicion that this was discussed recently but can't remember the take home message. This is the first diesel I'll have owned so don't really know whether the fancy fuels are worthwhile on a modern diesel.

I filled up my current car today at a Shell and noticed that the regular diesel was 131.9p/litre and their V Power version was 139.9 so quite a difference.

Is it worth it??

For my derv's, no it isn't worth it.

But your new one? Don't know if it would make any difference.

Best thing is to try 2 -3 tanks of each and keep a record.

Big debates about this - I'm not convinced at all TBH but many say the odd tank of rip off fuel will clean the engine a bit.

Some stick Millers in the tank every 10th fill up - I might do similar but having spoken to a decen indy BM specialist, I think I'll stick with normal fuel.

UK fuel is a rip off but our diesel is a decent grade. In the US, it's utter cr4p.

Thanks.

Did I read somewhere that BMW might try and escape a warranty claim on the engine if they see additives like Millers have been used?

Ding - I've heard that too but then a lot of BS is put out by BMW - like the whole run flat tyres bollocks they spouted when owners dared to suggest that RFT tyres are in fact crap.

Mine's out of warranty so I can do what the hell I want with it!

Maybe a tank of super fuel every now and again? I have yet to see a single bit of conclusive evidence that rip off fuel actually makes a difference. It's all wishy washy stuff about "the car feeling smoother" and the like - no facts, just a lot of marketing spin and a lot of people convinced that if they don't pay 7p ++ more a litre for fuel, their car will immediately explode.

Marine engines churning out 1000s of bhp cope, military engines do too.

I asked the same when I bought my 530d, it made a drop of 2mpg. So I use the norm now, as said it suppose to be cleaner and clean your engine so I may my self stick some in every now and then.

I don't bother with it.

Tried it when it first came out. Couldn't see any real difference TBH, apart from the price.

Fuel does not "clean" your engine.

Complete combustion does.

How you achive that goal is open to debate.

Thanks, I'll just stick to the regular stuff and put the odd tank of the expensive stuff in.

Alan, have you had your wheels done yet?

Regular oil changes will do a better job of keeping the engine in good nick. Diesel is a dirty fuel at the best of times anyway, so putting an additive to help resolve this is a better bet in my book.
I still haven't seen any cast iron proof that this "super" diesel will do anything more than make your wallet lighter!!

I use supermarket diesel and a shot of millers in each tank - comes highly recommended on the Bimmer forums. Works out a lot cheaper than 8p a litre more for VPower Diesel.

Again though, mines out of warranty but hadn't heard BM were iffy about addititives - what the hell goes in VPower Diesel then if it isn't a load more additives over standard diesel!

They probably add a bit of Naptha or octyl nitrate or something.

I concur with the above, full up with full fat diesel occasionally

(my car seemed to run better, after I accidently filled it with 4 star)

When i got my replacement works diesel van (2nd hand one), it was a bugger to start and had a hesitation when putting my foot down.

I tried a can of BG244 having read it was the only additive that actually did anything usefull. In my case it did the trick and the hesitation disappeared and it now starts at the 1st sniff of the key.

I've never used super diesel in any of my cars but do use BG244 every 10k or so. We tried using nothing but supermarket diesel for 4 months last year and then used nothing but our local shell diesel for 4 months. We didn't see any difference in mpg to speak of.

IMO you would be better off using standard diesel and then add a can of say BG 244 every few thousand miles. These cans are about £20 a time but actually work and are vastly superior to the £5-10 millers/red/stp crap most people buy from Halfords. My brother used a can in his VW 2.0 tdi and its stopped chucking out black smoke and feels factory fresh.
