Mini Cooper Vs. Fiesta Zetec S
Bit quiet in here so I thought I'd gather some opinions.
It would be for my wife so image and perception are as important to her as outright ability.
She likes the Mini and the Fiesta, would really like another A3 but the interesting ones are too expensive. The car would be either new or 2 years old.
Thoughts please!

I've ordered myself a mini cooper diesel...
Never seen myself as a "mini man", but I went for a test drive in one and the interior and quality feel sold it to me. It's also very comfortable in comparison to the car it's replacing (a clio).
Looked at fiestas before getting the clio a couple of years back, but they didn't do it for me (nowhere to put left foot apart from keeping it *on* the clutch pedal) and it also felt very, very small inside.
The mini in comparison feels spacious and it's "nice" to sit in.
Delivery date scheduled for end of june, can't wait!

Interesting.
We haven't test driven either yet but intend on doing this back to back one weekend.
By the way, it will be a petrol rather than a diesel (no more than 8000 miles per year).

My wife is a bit of a badge snob so Citroens, Suzukis and Fiats are all out; the irony of the main family car being a Skoda is lost on her! The Fiat prejudice is justified though after our experiences of a MY96 Punto!
It's taken 6 months to convince her that she doesn't want a BMW 116 as our budget would only stretch to a poverty spec model.

if you're looking at Coopers then you should be looking at Fiesta Titanium's rather than Zetec's, its just a trim level and the Titanium is superior.
I looked at the mini also but it was over priced for the specs, and didn't have the option range that the fiesta did.
The bodykit was a mere £500, I also went for the tech pack etc.
The cooper diesel is certainly worth a look for anyone who has to drive through the Congestion Charge zone in london, and it is cheap on road tax.

The Mrs has a MCS John Cooper Works.
Picked it up when it was 2 yr old with 3k miles on the clock.
She has had it for 4 years and 20k miles later its never put a foot wrong.
I actually like driving it, 200+BHP and that super-charger........
Totally standard, with pops & bangs from the exhaust as well.
Mini customer service aint bad either!

A two year old mini, hmmmm.
I work on them, so i'm going to only point out the bad things here.
Ultimately they are good, as if you took how many of them that are out there on London's streets, compared to the ammounts i see, that would say they are pretty good.
Windscreens have been known to leak by the rear view mirror.
Don't get one with a sunroof as it will just jam on you (probablyy at the worst possible time)
The gearboxes and clutches are much better now (just google the old r50 gearbox problems and you'll know what i mean)
Things to check.............
On the cooper and the one
Water pumps can leak. Located on the off side (drivers side) rear of the engine. Check the coolant level regularly to catch it before your warranty goes.
Cooper s.
The timing chain can rattle, this is a recognised issue. Get the car booked in, where it will have a new chain tensioner fitted and an engine software update.
Get one with the TLC pack as it slashes servicing costs dramatically.
17" rims will tram line
Cooper s cars do torque steer a bit (test one before you buy one and you'll see what i mean)
The diesels are very robust, not really had any issues with them, however i find the french diesels tend to be more frugal. (doesn't mean i condone getting a french cheese wagon!)
Any other questions??

Defo look at the DS3, the DSport 150THP is a cracker and the badge snob will be happy to know the engine was co-developed with BMW (they use it in the Cooper S).
We were in the same position and the Ford and Mini were out shone by the DS3 by a country mile. So we got one
Cheers

To balance that though, you'd pay list for the Mini but get a good discount on the Fiesta. Also, you need to add a fair few options to the Mini - Chili pack - which you won't get back come resale/trade in.
