E46 M3 on track?
Anyone have experiance of the e46 m3 on track?
I currently have a focus commuter car and the scoob for the track.
Thinking of selling both for a nice e46 m3, but would still be nice to get out on track days with it. Any idea how they cope on track? i.e are the brakes/suspension totally useless, or will just better pads make it a decent track weapon? How do the engines hold up with a bit of track work?
If the e46 could tick both commuter and trackday boxes i think ill be doing what i never thought i would and sell the scoob!

Have driven a freinds on a couple of track days, great fun rear wheel drive etc, the biggest problem is the brakes, they will need upgrading for regular track work, they also eat tyres

Ap upgrades are popular it seems on them.
Are the brakes even with ducting and uprated pads/disks that useless on track? It is a heavy beast.
It will not be heavy track work. just fun.
How are they with their fueling setup up, and oil pump? Scoobs seem to get fuel cut and oil starvation. Is this something the m3 doesnt suffer with generally as a track car?

Agreed but quite a bit more expensive aren't they? £20k extra when new?
From my point of view, I am rather dissappointed with my E36 328i. It's ok but lacks that edge that the scooby seems to have. The BMW is much more a lazy drive, so slightly frustrating when you want to have abit of fun. I would stock with what you have.
Also, I would never track my everyday car, just far too much risk involved.

No cant afford a CSL.
And my track action would be much reduced compared to what the scoob gets.
I dont mind that it wont be as sharp. This is to be a road car used on occasionally track car rather than track car used on road occasionally.
As long as its not totally inept on track that will do i think.
I would be getting rid of 2 of 3 cars to bring in the m3 so would still have a back up car to get to work.
Not sure how the SMG copes on track? But as i say id look at is as more of fun rather than i do with the scoob which is fast as possible. Or atleast id hope i could look at it like that...

Mines an SMG and I love it , its a bit like marmite , you do or you dont !
You wont need to do anything to the engine to take it on the track , they are very well built and use very good quality parts in them , its not the lightest of cars with all the toys in them , but mine handles very well considering its standard apart from Eibach springs , the standard rear springs snap , so check these if your getting one , brakes are fine for road use but would need upgrading for track use.
You dont get the whoosh of a turbo car , but they go when revved , and rev they like

It all sounds good then.
So does the SMG suffer from any overheating on track?
Yes ive read a few potential problems and recalls, and would get BMW to check it for subframe cracks, springs etc etc.
All looks good for one then. Ill make a proper sale list tonight and start properly speccing up the precise car i want for a good month or two of shopping for the perfect specimine.
