Merc CLS 320cdi as a family car?
Can a CLS Merc be used as an everyday family with two kids in the back; school runs; shopping etc. Or does the small door apertures; low rear seats; sloping rear roof; poor rear visibility; slightly large size make it difficult, especially when getting kids in & out of child seats?
Also what are peoples general opinion on them?
Iv always loved these cars & now early examples can be had for approx £18,500 and in a years time should be around the £16,500 mark or maybe less as new shape is comming out this year.

Whilst I can't comment on the practicality of the CLS, I can comment on the E320cdi which my company very kindly furnished me with. I loved it. Fantastic build quality, understated, great to drive in sport mode and very comfortable in erm, comfort; a nice place to sit with the Avantgarde trim and the engine was superb whilst returning 35mpg. I'd have it back in an instant. I imagine the CLS would get on my nerves if I had to do a lot of ferrying about; you clearly realise this might be the case. My view is that the looks of the CLS don't out-weigh the inconvenience of losing a couple of doors.

Thanks for advice so far
Good to hear the 320 cdi engine is up to the job, as our current family car is a 2002 BMW E46 330d which has been faultless in over 4 years of ownership. It is as fresh & well put together as when it first rolled out of the factory 8 years ago. I do like German cars as well as Jap & test drove the CLS petrol version when it first came out in 2005 & thought it was amazing. Though too expensive for me at the time. Hopefully at the end of this year will be able to sell my 330d for approx £5k to £6k & put in the difference of approx £10k for the CLS. May also get down to the Auctions nearer the time?
If a remap is on the cards I think I'l go to Evolve Automotive in Lutton, have heard a lot of positive things about them tuning German cars.

Evolve and DMS are the ones to use for remaps (depending on which is closest) - both very good.
The CLS looks a bit like a melted S class to me but good cars and the 320CDI unit is a strong one.

Evolve are just up the M1 from me in Bushey & one of them is related to a friend of mine so should be able to get a good deal hopefully. I know Evolve have a good rolling road setup & very good mapper. I would also prefer Evolve as IIRC DMS just come to you with a laptop & do a reflash?? Might be mistaken though.

I'd be hard pushed to choose - both are helpful and both have good things said about them (I know people who have used both). But if Evolve are local, use them - Imran is very helpful as is Sal.

A friend has one........she won't let her kids in it!! Her husband has an X5 to ferry them around in.
I often wonder why these Coupes/Pseudo Coupes don't get the same abuse reserved for 4x4s. Yes, it is pretty but but it's just an E-Class with less room inside. In the same way that an E-Class estate does everything that an M-Class can do and more - the same could be said of the CLS. They are just a styling exercise designed to appeal to a customer's ego/perception of themselves.
No offence intended by the way to any owners. In isolation the CLS is a lovely car.
