Yes it does have the Vanos system. It's not that much of a problem, just make sure it's not noisy at idle. Shouldn't sound like a diesel

I have never had Vanos problems on my Beemers

I didnt think it had vanos on a normal 328i but if it has it'll be a the more reliable single vanos unit as found on the e36 m3 non evo, the e36 evo m3 had the double vanos which is more problematic

what about the nikasil problems. the car has 100k so could it still be affected or would this have been sorted when the car was new ?

I'm not sure about that but I think that problem also might be a bit exaggerated. I had a 528 -96 and I never needed to fill any oil between oil services. No documentation of engine replacement eighter.

Wait until spring, as whilst the snow is here you wont move, snow is to BMW's what Stairs are to Daleks*

Certainly not risking our Beemer in any snow or ice. Comedy Jimny all the way at the moment!

AFAIK that 328i engine is near enough bullet proof.

328 engines are bullet proof and have had about 3 of them over the years all of which had way over 140K miles and still going strong. Great engines and performance from them, and great value for money performance/comfort motoring.
