Default ford fiesta timing belt question

hi all, quick question about chaning the timing belt on a 2004 fiesta.. my neighbour is a mechanic and has said he will change the belt on our fiesta but he is having trouble getting the bolt out of the bottom pully.... so he asked me to take it to a gargae to get an air gun on it, but the garage have said if they get the air gun on it then it will mess up the timing.. is this right or are they trying it on... i thought the bottom pully is just a guider pully.

(my neighbour is out of work by the way) thats why he cant do it at his place of work

thanks

slackening the bolt (and thus breaking the seal that is holding it on) and nipping it back up will not affect the timing.

As said, just slackening it won't cause any probs.

You could put a spanner / ratchet on the bolt, wedge it up against something and then flick the engine over on the key, do not let it start! If it goes ****, you ain't seen me! (I've used this method and it often works, bit unorthodox though!)

Some cars dont have a keywayed bottom pulley, its only the tightness of the bolt holding the pulley in position. They inner pulley will spin freely if the pulley bolt is undone.

Not sure about Fiesta though..What engine is in it ?

This is spot on if it is a zetec engine, you need correct tools to time cams and crank... any motor factor sells this cheap kit . more info on engine required.

If its a zetec im sure you need a timing pin to lock the web of the crank.

At your own risk......

I have seen these go at a lot less miles than that, sometimes the tensioners and rollers collapse too...

Why risk it ??? Cambelt kit job is cheap enough, there not hard to fit..

On the other hand,if you have a cambelt problem, you could be into a replacement lump as a cheap option
