Default Focus St remapping

There is probably a full topic on this subject but here goes. I have owned my ST for about 3 weeks now and i am thinking about getting it remapped. A local guy has said he will take it up to 265BHP (can do more he says) for around £275. I need to know basically is it worth doing etc and does the cost sound about right???

You should go the tried and tested route rather than the "local chap" route.

If money is an issue then either buy a second hand Dreamscience unit (or Code:Red, Bluefin etc) or just pay a visit to DS in Hull and let them load one of their single maps on for approx £250 (the DSCI map is excellent).

Or just pay out for the proper Dreamscience handheld kit so you have a choice of maps and can load/unload them when you like.

Mountune is the official Ford backed kit and gives you a remap, new intercooler and a panel filter and it wont affect your warranty.

DS is just a remap, then you can buy induction and intercooler separately as and when funds allow.

If money isn't an issue and you like to keep the Ford warranty in tact then the MT conversion is good as they all tend to offer similar performance (260 to 300bhp ish depending who you speak to )

There is a good write up in last months EVO that had a monotune ST against there RS. The ST was quicker to 130 MPH......The ST was also 90 odd KG lighter which surprised me but probably explains the ST's pace

Yeah i saw that, funny you can get an ST for what? 17k or so spend 1500 quid on it and have a much better car than an RS i.e. quicker and understated.

I would imagine the 90kg weight difference makes the ST a nicer car to chuck about.

It's about £22k to spec an ST up to the level of the RS, and then it will never have the suspension setup to match the RS.

It doesn't need to as it will be 90kg less and handle better simply as a result of that.

Basically all your getting is a bit extra with a bodykit.

Plus i suspect that most people (and i'd be in that list) could not push much faster in an RS on the road.

The Focus ST and Focus RS debate reminds me of the Escort RS Turbo/Cosworth of yesteryear. Even if you can modify the ST to "beat" an RS, the RS commands more respect just like the Cosser did because out of the box its the better car.........

Its not always just about a traffic light grand prix race.............

I suspect a lot of people do even the ones who are adament that 200+ bhp FWD is just wheel spinning power lost......... certainly a car which invokes discussion. Personally I like the fact its styling is seen as "in yer face and vulgar" by some. At least its not understated into obscurity. I'm interested to see how the second hand market prices hold up as time moves on....I like the fact that other manufacturers are having to respond with 240+ bhp cars. the more the merrier imo

I scoffed at the idea of high power fwd cars until i drove an Astra VXR admittedly round Oulton park so maybe not an acurate assumption and it was dry. The astra is meant to be shall we say a bit lively but i was very impressed at how it put its power down.

Anyway a bit of torque steer didn't hurt anyone it makes a dull drive a bit more exciting

Fully agree, I have a modded ST that is quicker than an RS in a straight line, but I don't care I would still prefer an RS over my ST as it is the daddy in comparison.

Also similar to the 205 GTI 1.6/1.9 situation back in the day - 1.6 owners could argue all day long that it was freer revving etc etc, but if you owned the 1.9 you commanded more respect.

I know you are just messing, but I have it on good authority that the RS will murder the ST on the twisty bits due to the new suspension setup, even if they are a little tail happy.

From my personal experience of Clio's the driver would probably be rushing to the nearest Renault garage with yet more problems, so I would just pull over and let him go.
