Sleepers ?

Sleepers ?
Been done before but I just love them so am after your suggestions as to the sleepiest looking car with the most inappropriate performance compared to the looks, I like Danny Lads Ibiza, that may be the ultimate sleeper even though its a bit shouty looking, usually young lads in bright yellow hatches with big wheels and exhausts have only a 1.2 65 bhp engine, not 300 plus.
Currently, I am thinking a Volvo 740/760/940/960 type thing running a 400 bhp plus motor and upgraded brakes and suspension to cope, but running standard looking wheels, preferably an estate, anyone any idea on the specifics to achieve this, which engine etc ?
Would you be happy to drive a ratty, pig ugly, sheddy looking Volvo estate if it did the business or would you rather drive something slower and less obnoxious ? I personally don't have any need to drive anything with any status so I am not bothered, in fact I think I would really enjoy it.

I'd prefer something that looked the part as well but I think a tatty sierra LX estate with cossie bits would do the trick and be relatively easy as opposed to finding something like a montego countryman and shoehorning something nice into it.

I like 60s saloons and estates with modern running gear. For example I'd like a Vauxhall Cresta PC saloon with an LS1 motor preferably stock-ish looking (some dechroming to tidy up the lines) but lowered on American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels. Or looking slightly later, I'd like a brown Viva HC estate with black vinyl roof on Rostyles running a red top 16v motor.

Not quite what you're after but worth a look:
One for the Mrs on the school run...? mid-mounted F1 V10 with 700bhp, 186mph, 0-125mph 6.9 secs.
YouTube - Renault Espace F1
And for you white van men in a real hurry, Ford have done some speedy Transits in their time...
Don't you just love mainstream manufacturers when they let themselves go a bit mental

2CV with a huge engine fitted?
I'm not a big fan of sleepers - my old 205 was pretty much a sleeper as it looked like a bog std 1.9 GTI which everyone expected to have at most 130BHP, but when the 200bhp throttle bodied noise fired up I could pretty much whip anything and it always got looks of amazement.
But, you end up looking out for any opportunity to embarass quicker cars, and you rarely get the chance in reality as most people aren't that bothered, so the whole idea of a sleeper car is lost and you're really just driving round in a old tatty quick ****box.

Buy a already modified 400bhp+ Nissan 4wd Pulsar GTi-R that does the 1/4mile in mid 11secs...... Run 15inch looking standard looking wheels, put a normal sunny bonnet on it, drop the big win, don't have a big looking exhaust and paint the modified intercooler black behind the front grille. Oh, and put sunny 1.4 badges on it.
Having owned a Pulsar for 8 years before, I know a few who have done this and was tempted myself at one time, providing its been done right with uprated box etc.
A very quick sleeper (you can tune them over 600bhp but that would cost a fortune and spend more time off the road).
On another note, I remember seeing a beige coloured really old Ford Sapphire GL at Trax event many years back, it did 60 low 4secs with rust actually flying off the wheel arches when it did it...........it had cossie engine and running gear all underneath.....very funny at the time as no one was expecting that!

I can see what you are saying actually, sometimes things can look too sleepy and just blend into the background, I suppose its down to whether you prefer solitary blasts or baiting drivers of supposedly faster stuff, me, I just like the idea of dawdling a bit and then pulling onto a dual carraigeway as Mr 330D Tag Watch and too much aftershave rep makes his displeasure felt
by hoofing past and you match him gear for gear until you decide to say goodbye, some flames shooting from your exhaust on gear changes for good measure.
I cant be doing with the pecking order surrounding cars and like anything that upsets the Status Quo.
That black Volvo is cool, perhaps a little too ratty though.
Apparently the later 940 2.3 turbo is the one to go for, thats not a phrase I ever though I would say !

I have been looking into them MG ZT260`s with the V8 engine myself, although people are saying they are a bit slow
apparently they supercharge really well (380hp) and the drivetrain was always designed to run this kind of power anyway, iirc before the collapse of MGR they were due to bring out a ZT385 model so pre setup the chassis and drivetrain to handle it
and they look like an old mans R75 as well
6k fitted for 400bhp and 450lbft

not sure how much the base zt260 car goes for, but i would assume its pennies, like the rest of the range.

btw dont some of them ford pickup trucks come with a crazy v8 engine? i recall seeing something on top gear about it.
i still think one of the scooby time attack cars fitted with the "casablanca" bodywork would be amazingly awesome
just imagine a 500/500 version of one of them, the looks on other peoples faces pmsl!
