Diesel fuel consumption (X-Trail)

Diesel fuel consumption (X-Trail)
I used to have a (55 reg) 2.2DCI Nissan X-trail sport. This vehicle would give an extremely constant and satisfactory fuel consumption of 394 plus-or-minus 6 miles from full to red light (50l). I replaced it with an (06) 2.2DCi Aventura (yep, there was some bent metal at one stage), from which I do well to get 340 Miles from same fuel load and same driving regime, and the figures are much more variable. This doesn't change if I switch off the roadholding aids which the Aventura has, but the Sport didn't. Questions:
1) How consistent should fuel consumption be between two nominally very similar vehicles? As much as -15% shown here?
2) Do roadholding aids adversely affect consumption? (Note, this is not a T-Spec with top-of the range aids)
3) The new is altogether quicker than the old. Is it possible still to 'chip' Diesels, and if so could this account for the difference? (dealer says all is OK on the diagnostics).
Both driven permanently in 2WD.
TIA

My '55' converts to a touch under 40mpg, and my 06 to about 34. There's an interesting post from Jay M immediately after mine in the X-Trail thread which might give the clue as to the answer, namely my 06 may have a higher power output (note my comment about better performance) than did my 55??

Hi, as in the other thread I'm considering one of these, reading around I've seen reports of troubles with injectors making them run rich - also if the turbo is on the way out. Not wanting to alarm you, just info from Parkers

BTW the 2.2dci has always been 136HP
