Second car suggestions £2k-£5k
I'm looking into changing my cars and am on the lookout for a second car that will only be used occasionally (the other car will be a 7-seat 4x4 e.g. Discovery 3).
Happy to spend between £2k-£5k. It must have 4 seats (to take 2 small children) and be reasonably cheap to run (30 mpg is fine), PLG or similar road tax, and reliable. It will be for short journeys mainly.
The only other criteria (the hard bit) is that I don't want a 'normal' car - want something a bit different/rare/interesting/sporty - diesel or petrol, perhaps with a turbo - a car which is more likely to start rather than end a conversation!
I'm currently thinking of either an early (2001) Mini Cooper from auction for £5k or a pristine 205 GTI with PAS/ABS for £2k

How about one of these:
Skoda : Octavia VRS
No good if you're a badge snob, but if you don't care about that they're decent cars.

If you don't like the Octavia VRS then you could do a lot worse than consider another VAG stablemate the Leon Cupra. These can be had in high spec with full black leather and lowish miles for your budget and you don't have to put up with the nasty VRS seats (only real downside to that car IMO)

Golf GT TDI 130BHP, I've got one as my second car, and it is fantastic, a great mix of performance and economy, and you can have it for 5K, Black, 52 Reg, FSH, 97K, 5 door
I am going to put it up on the trader and pistonheads this week for £5,500 as I need something bigger and cheaper. Can send you some pics if you are interested

If its only going to be used for short journeys then does 30mpg matter that much?
For £5k you have a world of choice, including an early WRX STI right thru to a V8 powered rwd car.
How interesting do you want?
How about these as a few ideas:

my bad. Have no idea actually, was just thinking back to an old Top Gear episode with Quentin Wilson. Think Classic & Sports Car has done a buyers guide/comparison in the past.
What sort of money are they going for nowadays?

Volvo 850 T5 V70 or a T5-R. Well over 200 bhp and a big boot for all the kids stuff. Some lpgs floating about too.
The T5-R might start a conversation, looks a bit better than a bog standard T5, more power and quite rare. £2.5k should get you a good one. Wouldn't a Mini be very small?

Difficult to say, they only made a few dozen so they don't come up for sale often. Also some unscrupulous people have hacked them up and rebodied them as Cobras using the original chassis. They are not the same car. I think any decent AC428 would easily fetch 30K, probably 45K for a top convertible.

Gosh - what a choice! Thanks for suggestions, especially 300bhp/ton. Regarding the others, I would choose the Seat Leon Cupra over the Octavia vRS and would probably pay more to go diesel. £5200 is the asking price of the cheapest Cupra TDI 150 - 2004/04 106k. However a Cupra 20V T (pre-2001 Y for PLG tax) is also tempting, and cheaper.
Also found a 2004/53 X-Type 2.0D Sport with 92k and 12 months warranty for £5295. I haven't quite turned 40 yet!
Peugeot 406 Coupe 2.2 HDi for £4.5k
As for unusual - Renault Avantime 2003/52 for £4000 ??? Maybe not.
And 2003 Subaru Legacy saloon with 74k for £1500.
