Porsche 996 Carrera 2/4
Looking at the used car adds it seem you can pick up a good condition c. Year 2000ish 996 Carrera for around the £22k mark.
Anybody got any experience of overall running costs compared to a Newage STi
It won't do any more than 7-8k miles a year, and i'd imagine would be serviced at a Independent specialist instead of a main stealer
Belive it or not the Insurance costs are LOWER on the Porker than they are on my STi

Keep in mind that a car of that age will only qualify for porsche warranty for a further year. I'd think long and hard before running one without, as engine/gearbox bills could be expensive, and there are enough occurrences of intermediate shaft failure requiring total engine rebuild/replacement to be a cause for at least some concern.
If you don't need the rear seats - and can rise above the ill-informed "poor man's porsche" comments - my £20k would go on a late facelift Boxster 986S [260]. I used to own a 2003 996C2 and recently had use of my friends 2003 Boxster S for a couple of months, and can honestly say I think the Boxster is the better steer.
Gary.

Thanks Guys.
The RMS (rear main seal) Problem mentioned on Pistonheads is not such a problem after speaking to a few people on 911.com. However the Shaft failure is a lot more worrying, with tales of £6.5k engine rebuilds and even engine changes!! Hard to belive a company like Porsche would have such a serious problem.
Not a fan of Boxters tbh, never really been a fan of any soft top, always remind me of a city boy or a hairdresser lol. The hunt continues!!!

I wouldnt bother with the PCGB forum if youre looking for information about shaft or oil seal failures. Porsche have insisted that they censor/remove all criticism or theyll pull their £150,000 a year club support...
