Default Scruffy MX5

A lady at work has a scruffy MX5, she is a bit hard up and due to her neglecting it a bit it gives trouble, i was thinking I could buy it, put the work in and do it up, needs a good clean, some bodywork and a good checkover, fresh MOT etc. Its been bumped a few times and repaired, nothing major but its not a minter, far from it. The wheels are black and crusty, its covered in scuffs.

What is it worth, 1.8i and a 98, Silver, not sure on mileage but probably 80 ish.

I dont want to rip her off, but I want a few quid for my efforts, so whats it worth ?

A grand ?

I am not after nicking it, was thinking of solving her problem of selling it, tarting it up and using it for a while then flogging it.

It is a complete bin, what is it ladies do to cars ?

If its a 98 Its probably a Mk2 which is much nicer car than the Mk1. The purists still like the Mk1' s but having had both the Mk2 is much nicer inside and to live with.

Done up its worth 4-6K. As for price you offer - its all down to how much work is involved. Its amazing what can be done with just a bit of TLC, T' cut etc.

If your not talking new body panels, and perhaps a few hundred on chips away and dent majician, a good service and some tlc, then worth a punt at £2K+

But as said above, If you could get it cheap enough, just give it some TLC to improve it, have some fun over the summer and then sell it for a bit more than you paid without all the agro of getting paint sorted and major work.

If you not driven a MX5 have go - you will be hooked. They are not the quickest car in the world, but with the hood dropped they are one of the most user friendly fun cars money can buy.

To give you some idea, recently been offered a trade in value of £4.5K for our 2002 MK2.5, with 48K and it's in superb condition.

I did something similar on a mates MR2, he wanted the private plate off it so I said give me the car and I'll MOT and tax it so he can get the plate off.

£750 later (Servicing, repairs, MOT and insurance costs) he get's his £2k plate and I get a minter

I wouldn't spend more that £800 as the repairs are unknown..

Somewhere between £1000-£1500 dependant on the cost to correct the scuffs. Expect it would be worth £3K ish on a private sale.
