My wife's Mk2 98 MX5 (54k) has recently developed a knocking noise that appears to be coming from the nearside rear wheel.
When the wheel is being driven there is no noise, however take your foot off the accelerator or put the clutch in and it appears.
It can be quite loud - it can be heard from some distance away. The frequency of the noise is directly linked to the rotational speed of the transmission/wheel.
Any ideas what could cause this? I'm thinking either wheel bearings or possibly something in the drive from the diff.

BTW, is there an MX5 equivalent to Scoobynet?

Don't know about the knocking noise, but you might want to check out the following link for some MX5 slanted advice.

Hope it helps!

Sounds like a wheel bearing - wouldn't expect the driveshaft on a car so new, those cars are pretty bulletproof.........

If it's the wheel bearings - any play in them?

Sounds like wheel bearings, but just thought I'd post a link to mx5mods.com as I've just had some help from there.

Wink

Thanks for all the links guys.

Unfortunately, I feel a bit a divvy as DrH took it into the dealer this morning who diagnosed...........two very loose wheel nuts (their mechanic hadn't tightened them up after the service..... )

Check the basics first will be today's lesson.......
