Depends what you want out of a car.
For a given budget there's always a load of options on what to get, the best bet is to go for the one that looks best to you. AWD is "easier" to drive than 2wd, 2wd is more involved and can be much less forgiving on minor mistakes.
Plus there's the hatch/coupe/4door choice, whether you want turbo or na etc. etc.
I love my 4door AWD turbo, I know people that sing the praises of rwd na's (a mate has a 650bhp TVR )... drive a few different cars and pick the one you like best. It works out easier in the long run...

*lol* @ all this
My Rover's quite nice, not at all a bucket, and it's reasonably nippy. Tip top in a straight line and all that but it doesn't have the poise round the corners that an AWD has, so it is a little more involving. I'm putting out about 220-225bhp with a similar torque, and all that through the front wheels can be troublesome if you don't know what you're doing. I'm currently getting traction control from Omex, which will work with my ABS sensors and fuel injection - should make a big difference to the handling
But, it is an older car, and it's not AWD, si I'm still saving up for an STI - gonna have both

Katana - You would really be wiping a tear if you had a go in one. It isn't a riced rover - its a 6R4. Come with a variety of engines, but the one I had a go in was a 3.4 twin turbo 700 BHP rallycrosser. 60 on gravel in under 4 seconds? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Mook,
have you looked at the racelogic traction control...i'm similar to you about 230bhp with around 240lbs torque and it works very well
with variable slip and for a laugh, launch control...

Golf turbo > looked at that one but it's more expensive than the Omex, which also has the variable slip, launch control, fuill throttle gear change, built in rev limiter and shift light!
Plus, I'm an Omex dealer so I'm using my motor as a test bed
Dream Weaver > yup, that Mynheer kit is indeed horrible . When they revealed it on their BBS, everyone said it was naff, and they got so upperty they shutdown the BBS, there's customer service for ya
