£5-6K 5 door diesel hatch choice?
So, Mum and Pop need a new family car/runaround/shopping trolley etc....all about 4 years old...
Astra SRI (new shape)
307 HDI 110
Almera DCI 136
Focus TDCI
Leon TDI 110
(No VW allowed as Mum hated her Polo she's just got rid of )
Are they all pretty much equal these days or is one of those particularly better than the others?

Definitely not the Peugeot. This doesn't sound like a short term purchase and the Peugeot must have the shortest life expectancy. I was going to take the safe option of the Nissan, but I reckon the Focus is the best bet. Loads of them around and parts are cheap. Also the best to drive, still goodlooking and definitely the best all-round package when new.

Focus TDCi for me if I had to have one. I had one at work did 21k in 19 weeks loved every minute of it! Cracking engine, just wanted to be driven hard.
It took a good hammering and didn't miss a beat, company got rid at 124k and apart from service items it didn't go wrong.
Seats were comfy, plenty of kit (ghia) and parts will be cheap.
One point worth making, Seat's are VWs.

....actually, the Fab had that Golf chassis before the Golf did - so in reality, a Golf is a Fab in drag
To be serious, the VRS is a lot of car for the money. Quick, solid, plenty of toys (heated seats are my fave) and 50,pg all day long

Wife has a 55plate Astra TDI SRI company motor and has been excellent. 30k in last 18 months and totally reliable, suprisingly competant and gives her 50mpg.
Absolute bargain used as well.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, after a little googling i have confirmed that you are right [/humble]
I will stand by the statment that the vrs is a totally different kettle of fish to "most" Polo's.
I will try and quantify that statment - I've had the dis-pleasure of driving one or two lower spec fabias and a Ibiza (same chassis yes?) and they were horrible all round. The VRS looks and feels like it's on a different planet to it's lower spec brothers and sisters. Have a look at an MY03 base model Mondeo and then Jump in the ST spec Mondeo - night and day

Cheers guys...
Can't find any Fabias locally (from traders with warranty - they're old school and won't buy private!) Focus is very good but can't find any new shape ones for the money where as an Astra would be the current newer shape.
Found an Astra SRI CDTI a few miles up the roads from a respected local dealer so looking at that. 30,000 mile / 2 year servicing intervals on the Astra i've found Don't think any of the others offer that?
Oh, Diesel because my mum moaned like hell that her Polo GTI only did ~30mpg average and wasn't comy to drive (She had my old Mk5 Golf GTI for a bit but thought it was too "jumpy"?!?) So they want more economy and lazy power so she doesn't have to rev it which doesn't suit her driving style. They're also fed up with spending Three times as much on a car that only gets driven to work/shops/b+q/train station as well which is fair enough.
