Yes they are quite nice

we had one it a while back, some very nice innovative touches

if its anything like the standard 1 series diesel saloon, then it wont be a slouch

Should be quite impressively quick actually - it's as powerful as my 330D which is less than four years old. What BMW have done with diesel recently is astonishing IMHO.

We had one as a loaner a couple of weeks ago. The diesel part was excellent - I'm not sure it uses diesel - I think it runs on air. The 1 series part wasn't - You can't see out much back or sides. The one I had was over 30k new with SatNav and leather. It kept tuning the engine off at traffic lights. I kept hitting the button to turn it on again. Took it back next day to collect the other car and told the service guy that it kept stalling....... He laughed heartily at me and told me that was a fuel saving feature :doh: It has too many gears as well. You only need 1st, 2nd, 6th (and R obviously) - Good car, but there must be something you can see out of for 30k

Its got to be abit on the peaky side with the power delivery though, surely. As being such high BHP for such a small capacity disel its going to be very reliant high amounts of forced induction. The high output VAGs suffered from that

Unless BMW really have cracked the turbo trickery.

The torque curve will tell everything...what happens to it above 2250rpm


Still, an credible trade-off for a economical engine.

Yup. Twin variable turbos, it wont be long before you see the likes of VAG etal going down the same road.

Our kids got one, and its not bad at all!

Plenty of torque, quite fast, excellent mpg even if you cane it!

Just a bit expensive for my tastes!

Just hope they don't use these annoying "overboost" features that is the current trend.

Does the 123d feature overboost (I hope not).

Been looking at these myself (well, a 123d hatchback - ugly, but need the boot), but they are far too expensive at the moment...even 2nd hand they are LS2 Monaro money

I'd agree with that. I had a 120D as a courtesy car for a couple of days and, whilst it was nice enough, delete the badge and I could have been in a VW (and not an Audi). There's no question that my E46 330D is a much higher quality machine.

Just been loaned a 123d Coupe Sport for a couple of days and must admit to being very impressed. It pulls well enough from 1400 rpm in 6th, just to give an idea of how flexible the engine is. In fact, the power is very linear compared to our 320d (which is tuned to about 180/190 bhp).

Not sure about the looks, especially side on - looks better up-close imo. Interior is nice and simple and all the better for it. Driving position is superb, loads of adjustment in the seat and masses of headroom for me (6'1''). Ride is also better than the 320d (Sport Touring), which is a bit of a surprise, considering it has run-flats.

Best of all, it doesn't sound like a diesel and feels 'special' from the driver's seat. Very tempted to get one as a replacement for wife's company car!

Yeah - these diesels are great but by god they are expensive!! Kind of wrecks the economy debate when its a 30k+ car. For that money I want something really special. These Beemers are like joe bloggs mundane cars these days.

Despite his initial opinion on the car, the 1 couldn't be better for value for money relative to his requirements and he bought a 120d hatch.



120d M-Sport 3 door hatch [177hp], 5 months old, 5k miles, leather, audio upgrade, lighting package, 18” alloy wheel upgrade, USB etc.

Much cheaper to run than the 330d, as quick 95% of the time and does 45+mpg.

Well they may be expensive to start with, but at a guess the residuals will be good so they could be quite cheap to run. Mate who works for BM reckons they are better than the 130i (this is the hatch not the coupe)

Seriously thinking about one, but would miss the engine note of the 130i!

Can't see how they would do a standing km in less time than an M3 Evo though.... they're not that quick.

My 120D Sport (previous verion to this) was probably the best all round car I've ever owned, space not being a major concern.

Having lived with one, I can say that they are significantly better cars than the equivalent from VW or Audi.

I can also vouch for the residuals. As a result, it was also one of the least expensive overall.

The trick is to realise that a 2.0D or 2.3D 1 series doesn't need leather and sat nav (and a whole host of other useless extras) in the same way that the rest of the range do. Ther'r a £3k saving to start with.

All they need is to be the right base spec, have big wheels and a few carefully chosen interior extras.

Interesting. I thought leather would be a must have. Agree on satnav waste of cash. What else do you think should be specced?

The bluetooth is very clever, the USB connector for MP3/iPod is pleasant. All the rest isn't necessary IMO.

I loved my 130iM. Mine was LM blue, flashpoint cloth, wireless entry thingy, extra lights (under door handles etc), upgrade cd, armrest and rain sensors / auto lights. When I put it up for sale I got a call from a BMW main dealer who 24 hrs later bought it off me! It was very easy to sell, I guess they had a customer for the car.

On a 1 Series other than a 130/135, must haves in order are:

Metalic (but not the nastly brown colours)
Big wheels (17's are fine)
Centre arm rest (yes, really!)
Professional Audio (hi fi speakers not essential)
USB
And getting the right spec - ie Sport package (seats, suspension, etc)


Nice extras that may help

Xenons
Bluetooth
Hi fi Speakers
BMW floor mats (£75 a pop!)

Stuff that the dealer told me was a waste of cash (come resale time)

Leather
Auto lights/wipers
Comfort access
Lighting package (nice to have but no resale)
Sat Nav
Body kit
(and everything else on the options list)

Bottom line is that you can spec a decent 1 series for sensible money, if you don't fall into the the load it up trap.
