Default BMW 123d

Was out for a run and one of these little things was with us.

I must say, for an unassuming 2 litre diesel they go pretty well..!!! And allegedly give 45mpg+ and slot into one of the lowest tax bands.

How the hell does that work..?
Anyone else had experience of these things?

aye, you are correct

BMW has added a hot, yet frugal, diesel to its 1-series range. The 123d powered by a twin-turbo version of BMW’s excellent 2.0-litre diesel goes on sale in September.

Don't panic, I was behind him on a spirited drive out, no murdering was intended to be done, there was also 3 Porsche GT3's, a CSL, Z4M, Tamora, Saleen Mustang, lots of Elises and finally a Gallardo Superleggera out with us, so there were several murderers amongst our ranks, I was keeping my head down....

I just thought it was a very nippy car and was managing to generally keep up with things. Though I suspect the driver to be quite a handy wheelman....

For being in the same tax band as a Fabia Roomster diesel, having a claimed 54mpg, 200bhp+ and more torque than my STi, there appears to be witchcraft going on in the BMW camp....

This is it, I'm intrigued what it will do.

We all know "quoted" figures are a bit ambitious, but:
Top speed (mph)148Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec)6.9Acceleration 50-75 mph in 4th (sec)5.4

Urban (mpg)43.5Urban (ltr/100km)6.5Extra-urban (mpg)64.2Extra-urban (ltr/100km)4.4Combined (mpg)54.3Combined (ltr/100km)5.2CO2 emissions (g/km)138

How the devil does that work..???

Just doing some research on Google.

The 330Ci that people here say is quick in the mid range does 50-75mph in 6.9secs.

Mini Cooper S Works does it in 5.6.
The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo does it in 5.4.
The new E92 BMW M3 V8 does it in 4.9 secs.....a massive half a second quicker...!

Is this right..?

Probably, I suppose that depends on gearing as much as anything, is it recorded in top, or through the gears ?

Probably does early thirties knocking about and up to 50 with a light foot, in top, onthe open road, it takes a certain ammount of energy to accelerate a tonne and a half of motor car to sixty miles per hour in 6.9 seconds, thats physics and cannot be changed, sure they can make it more efficient when its not under load but when you call for 200 bhp it extracts the energy from the fuel by burning it, however efficiently, its not magic.

BMW are doing fantastic things with stop/start technology and regenerative braking, all been done before but they are making it work and not calling it ecomatic or some other off putting eco moniker, BMW have just ushered it in across the range, coupled with the advances in diesel technology they are now very efficient, only problem is the price, to save a few quid on fuel you have to spend 30k plus options (so 35k) to do it.

They seem to be using a lot of small improvements to improve efficiency rather than going for the big bang (Hybrid) and it seems to be paying off.

Where are the French in this, they used to do the best Diesel engines and now they lag behind by some margin.

Impressive by anyones standards. and the 50-75mph time was in 4th gear. Still can't find Scoob figures to compare...

these 2 can do it even faster

530d 50-75 Mph in 4th: 5.4 sec
535d 50-75 Mph in 4th: 4.4 sec

535d + dms will be even quicker!

Thing is Dave, from everything I read, the 535d seems to struggle on the mpg front against this 123d...?

Eh? 3.0 twin turbo hauling 1800kg vs 2.0 TT hauling 1400kg? Yes, I think it would use more fuel?

My wife has a 120d and that is a great car with only 164bhp.

Will have to convince her to get the 123d next.

At the end of the day, performance diesels are great, but you can't beat a high powered petrol for emotive driving thrills.

yeah for sure, but my one can do 30 - 35 mpg, which is really good for the weight of the car.

Full road test of the 123d coupe was in Autocar yesterday

Is it that much quicker/ better on emissions than an Alpina D3 though?

Through the gears (ie not stuck in 4th) the average scoob should do 30-70 in under 5 seconds, 30-50 is around half that (ie 2.5) in second gear..!

A quick one will be less at under 2 seconds for each..

An 06 uk STIPPP is quoted at 2.9 50-70 in 4th for a direct comparison..

NO it doesn't. You've read the mis-printed figures somewhere.

A 3.3 30-70 would beat the M5, many supercars etc. I suspect it's meant to read 5.3 or 6.3.

That's fine. It's just that I've have seen bmw/diesel fanboys in the past trumpeting this figure despite it being wrong but they won't have it.

Keep to the right facts and keeps the facts right, I say

Still, a quick car nonetheless...
