BMW X5 Any Automatic gearbox specialist's in the house ?
Hi fella's i have a 2001 bmw X5 4.4 sport automatic that about a 18 months ago had the reverse gear die (just no drive) After checking the fluid i was told that it needed the reverse gear clutch's in the box were shagged and it needed a rebuild. I sourced a 2nd hand box for 800 quid. No problem until last week now the box is juddering in reverse and reverse gear is now slipping. I can't believe i need another new box. I have been told that there is a ball check valve in the valve body that may cause this problem and that replacing the valve / valve body may cure the problem. I wouldn't know one end of an auto box from another so any advice info would be great.
Thanks in advance

Mmm with such a specialized problem like this, your best bet is to search out BMW forums, and ask there.
Perhaps :- MTorque.co.uk - The new name for BM3W - Passion for M Cars - Powered by UBB.threads™
If not there, search out gearbox specialists. Did the second hand part have a warranty ??
Best of luck though, nice car, would like one myself either 4.8 or the 3.0d.

Find the auto box in the inlaws 3.0D sport quite annoying.
Supposedly "learns" how you drive but it seems to change it's "mind" all the time.
Even tested it up a long hill - Same speed and rpm with different result each time.
Otherwise it's a very good car/truck/bus/HGV.

BMW Land - A Drivers Chat Talk Discussion Forum Board for UK BMW cars and owners 3 5 6 7 series Questions & Answers might help (worth a try!) - bit slow though, average of 1-2 posts a day in the X forums. Be patient!

2 X catalytic converters replaced
2x Gearbox
Airflow meter
2X Wheel bearings
The viscous fan bearings seized causing fan blades to shatter puncturing both normal and air con rads top and bottom hoses and made a huge dent in the bonnet that also had to be replaced and sprayed.
The digital display on the dash is shagged
1 x starter motor
1x battery
1x pneumatic suspension pump
both bottom balljoint's
It eat's discs and pads drinks fuel like George Best boozed and is basically a huge piece of ****e!!
Basically i wouldn't reccomend buying one.

Finchy - nasty. The inlaws one has been fine (although it's under a year old) but the 535d Touring they had before was so bad that they gave up after 5 months.
BMWs not always as reliable as their rep suggests.
Evo's 335i Touring also suffered major engine failure at a very low mileage.
Still like most of their cars though.

One of my reps has an X5 diesel that his missus drives around the M25 every day.
It's about 4 years old and it's had a turbo, fuel injection pump, cats, gearbox, manifold, basically it's a big pile of ****.
Flipside is my brother had an X5 diesel from new, ran it for 3 years and 35,000 miles virtually without incident.
