Astra VXR or S3?? Surely depends on how much you are willing to spend, as the S3 will be significantly more expensive and more expensive to run!
S3 if you have the funds, otherwise the VXR which is also a great drive apparently.

i maybe didnt make it clear that id be keeping the sti if i got the vxr but would sell the sti for the s3. im doing 25,000 miles a year and the sti running costs are just getting too much. the s3 is on long life servicing so wont be that different to the sti but id imagine would better 20mpg cruising, not sure what the vxrs like on juice- hence the thread

The VXR isnt expensive to run for its level of performance, and is a superb car that's amazing fun, one of the best cars Ive owned.
Saying that, if you're looking for an alternative car to your STi and intend to run both, Id recommend something with a VAG 2.0 TDi engine for your general commute, and use the STi on weekends and the odd nice day to work.
Althou the VXR isnt expensive to run, I think you'd save a lot more with a diesel for the commute and still have enough fun with the grunt of it, the VXR plus an STi would mean a lot of combined running costs.
I rate the VXR very highly, so as another option it may be even worth looking at a VXR plus an A3 2.0 TDi sport, and using a combination of them for your commuting. The VXR is pretty quick and excellent fun, and the TDi is a great comfortable car that is actually surprisingly quick too.
I went from an A3 2.0 TDi sport to a VXR, unfotunately couldnt afford to run both, but rate both very highly and think they'd make a great combo.
