Nice looking car, but why o why the vauxhall lump. Really would not want to rag it around with those tyres on. Spend all that money on it and fit cheap far east tyres, no way.

Very Nice I'm surprised he didn't 4 link the rear while he was welding in that area anyway though
The Red Top Vauxhall engine is widely acknowledged to be one of the best 4 cylinder engines around, is used in countless very competitive Escort rally cars up and down the country, and with MBE management (which this car has) and a decent set of bodies (which this car needs), is definitely a force to be reckoned with. It is also infinitely better than anything available from Ford (BD series excepted)
I personally would be more than happy to 'rag it round' on them tyres, Kumho have a good solid reputation in club level motorsport
Not unlike Yokohama and Bridgestone 10-15 years ago in fact

Nothing against the Vauxhall lump itself, just the fact its been put in such a good example of a Ford! As for the tyres, well, I take it back, and do apologise, Im only speaking from experience (of Kumhos!)

Nice car, tho has anyone noticed in the first 'offside' picture that the axle seems located very much towards the front of the rear arch?
Unless the fitting of the arches was a bit 'out' (looking at the quality for the rest of the car, this seems doubtful) - or is it an optical illusion because the rear of the car is sitting up a bit?
I agree with the Red Top being a good engine. BDA still sounds glorious but getting seriously wallet damaging to run nowadays.

I've no experience whasoever of Kumho's road tyres so I will bow to your superior experience in that department

Red Tops are beginning to aim for the same status these days too
As experiences go though, there's still not much to beat standing in the freezing cold p!ssing down rain, in a forest somewhere in Wales, waiting for the BDA/BDG you first heard from 3 miles away to finally howl past you

Whilst they may not have the first idea about how to build a decent performance car, Vauxhall have always been able to build a better engine than Ford. The only three engines Ford have ever got right weren't actually designed or built by them
I was spannering on the Jim Clark Rally last year, and we had several Mk 2 Escorts around us in tarmac spec varying from full hysterical spec (BDA) to the latest spec with consequential gearboxes and carbon fibre bumpers! But the main talking point was the one of the front runners who had the most powerful engine which happened to be a all singing and dancing Ford Duratec (I think that's what version it was - the alloy one anyway). It seems this is the thing to have these days, although at around £25,000, it isn't a cheap option. (Apparently the guys car car was the thick end of £70,000 )

PS - How do you manage to put quotes in different sections with different replies

The only better one was changing a starter motor when the thing was still red hot and covered in mud (for those that don't know, Mk2's used to have 2 batteries to spin them over with 24 volts to make them spin quick enough - the guys at Lucas must have caught on eventually with the amount of burned out starters!)
Try changing the front brakes of a car fresh out of a fast 12 mile stage, on a hot July Sunday
Tip: When wearing shorts, do not sit on the front wheel immediately after you've removed it
Copy and Paste are your friends

My main reason for buying a Vauxhall over a Ford was the engine.
Ford's often handle slightly better but often have pants motors - The Focus ST170 being a prime example.
Vauxhall engine in a classic Ford body seems ideal to me!

Finchy - I tested one and the handling was SO good but that farty, buzzy engine was a real let down.
Think the 5 cylinder unit in the new one is a bit cack too - A 215ish bhp engine should NOT struggle to get low 20s mpg!

Just seems a bit off to me putting a vauxhall motor in there. Yes the Ford units aren't the best but its a Ford! its meant to sound like a can of marbles being rattled!
Surely there must be a cosworth unit or something that would go in at worst. Its like sticking a zetec in a classic mini cooper, yes it will go, yes it'll be faster/more reliable etc but it doesn't make it right

pll use use the 20xe (redtop) over any of the ford units because as been said its better nither the pinto or a n/a cosworth engine can beat it on power OR drivability. the vauxhall as standard is a brilliant engine for 200 bhp on a set of bodies without any other bits done to it something the ford engine cannot live upto mainly dont to in standard form the vauxhall head being a much better flowing one

General Motors Deutschland did
Cosworth developed a 16V head to sit on an existing GM production block, exactly as they did for the Pinto. The XE just happened to be a far superior starting point
