Audi S4

Drove an X reg about 2 weeks ago.
Wanted an avant to lug bikes etc around. Very quick, couldn't quite take my scoob to 100 but passed that mine wouldn't have a chance - just kept pulling.
Main thing that put me off was running expenses and repair bills. The cost of replacing the turbos on the S4 was the same as a complete rebuild for an Impreza. Insurance was very expensive being more to insure in standard trim than my modified Impreza.
Plus the boot really wasn't that big anyway. Although the build quality was indeed much better, until I can afford an RS4 I'll stick to Subaru.

My old man had one for a few years. T Reg.
The main things from a negative point of view are:
Numb steering
Sloppy gearbox
Over servoed brakes
and brick hard seats.
Very rapid though, low down torque is very impressive, and because it's a turbo it's very tunable.
Being an Audi parts will be expensive, and MPG is about 20mpg.
Check that any car your looking at has had the Turbo brackets replaced under warranty as this is quite a big job (about £2k's worth). They normally go after 14,000 miles so all S4 should have had this done. Worth checking though.
Other than that my old mans was faultless.
Effortless A to B car, but after a couple hours you need a back massage.
Hope this helps

A standard car should do 27-32mpg on a run and a 430BHP K04ed car (like mine) will do 21-24mpg on a run.
Get yourself across to PostNuke powered Website and look at the buyers guide.

Well I've owned mine for 4.5 years and I have never heard of Turbo Brackets needing replacement....there are no 'Turbo Brackets'. I've also never needed a massage either, even when I drive 10 hours to Scotland.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure Audi said it was the Brackets.
27-32mpg ?? Bloody hell, I never saw that in my old mans. I must just drive a bit harder than you

Got an early model 98S.
On the flip side to other opinions, mine is cheaper to insure than my modded Scoob. Much quicker.
Don't find the seats too hard tbh. Return about 24mpg, and that's going some
The only scary thing is the potentially chocolate-based turbos They can be expensive. Servicing on that age car, well, you'd be mad to pay Audi's prices, as it's out of warrantee. FSH is a must though. Mine is 3rd-party servicing (same person who did my Scoobs - also does Group N stuff )........
Just check for the turbos being done at some stage - + get to MRC for a health check (the car, not you!)

Agree with some of this stilover, but I think the other guy's here have got it right, as like me, I've had one.
Agree with numb steering, but some after market ARB's improve this dramatically.
Sloppy gearbox - not able to change all that quickly - sloppy? a bit harsh!
Brakes - you get used to them.
Seat's - like the other guys, I found them ok.
Turbo's are like I believe they are with any car - treat them properly and they'le be ok too!
Parts - Lots of stuff (OEM) available everywhere - not necessarlily the dealers!
IMHO

Interesting thread this, I was also mulling one of these.
A garage near me has got a 99 model year car, one owner, 60K with FASH for £8995 in black.

If your going to buy one either get a health check done at MRC Tuning (MRC Tuning - Custom engine management for Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen) or have a look on RS246.com :: Dedicated to Audi S & RS Models for you local "VAG-COM" owner who should be able to check the car for errors or issues.
Always best to take someone with you who knows the 2.7 V6 S4 as there are a number of issues with TBB, DV or MAF which would not be apparent unless you know the car.

There was also a facelift in 99....try and get a post facelift car (Sept/Oct 99 onwards) as early cars have issues with exhaust manifolds and turbo oil lines which where rectifiec on the later cars. Best of all get the last cars (2001.5 model year) as these have different inlet manifolds and Hitachi Mafs rather than the crappy Bosch Mafs the other cars have.
