standard one is 133bhp.
The biggest mechanical problem is people do not check the oil, these engines have a tendency to burn a bit, they then run out - or the oil pickup in the sump gets clogged with oil sludge, leading to engine seizure. Sticking thermostat is another problem - from a cold start, temp gauge should read halfway within 5 miles of starting and should stay there.
The second biggest problem is their owners. Many belong to the "I want lots of power but I only want to spend 50p" brigade and wind up the boost without adequate fuelling, ignition or timing mods. For many owners its their first really quick car and haven't learnt mechanical sympathy yet.
They fit front mounted intercoolers which are far too big, and the stainless steel exhausts they often fit have a tendency to crack.

I havent long sold mine, the 4EF-TE lump is very very strong. all it needs is a filter and turbo back exhuast and you will have a nippy litle thing. Watch out for cam belt, and smoke (when tuned a bit the turbo seals, or valve seals are known to go) i ran mine on 1 bar boost never had a problem with it (as long as you get the cooling and fuelling right you can run 1 bar on stock internals, which should see you right for around 170-180bhp)

Starlet GT's seem great from my experience.
Can't think of much that's gone wrong on the 2 my mrs has had.. possibly sticking rear calipers (as both have had this, although may have been bad luck) Engines seem cracking, feel tough and very reliable. They sound good too, you'd never know they were a little 1.3 when you hear one go up the road.
