forget about vw's you'll still be paying over odds for a worn out banger, go for something odd
306 diesel/ petrol
citroen zx dieselpetrol
citroen xzara /petrol
mondeo diesel / petrol
or go for big honda's jap cars, nobody wants them, small ones are well used
i run a fiat brava jtd
great car used everyday got everything from abs to heated seats
but i do all my own mechanics and bough it cheap as px with knocking lump

I just got an E30 325 of ebay for £500 with a years MOT, and in top condition. Highly recommended 
4 door and gold, so probably untouched by chav owners
2 door ones seem to be rough at that price

Another vote for Citroen ZX diesels
Mate just got an 80K miles '96 model for £400, no rust at all and interior still in good shape.
For an old-tech diesel it actually goes pretty well and gives him 45mpg all day

yep i thought of one of those even the xsara are below a grand now in autotrader .
i could get a big or a mondeo or somat, but id rather get a 1.4 and not pay the extra on the tax on it to be honest
