How about a 90bhp Mk3 Golf Tdi? Mine's at 190,000 miles and genuinely returns 60mpg (ok, it's driven fairly gently). Reliable too.

have you had any issues at all with it?

I'm seriously thinking of getting one and have seen quite a few with 130-140k om the clock.

Just noticed your is a MK3 but i would imagine the sam eengine as the MK4

You can get a Mk4 for that kinda wedge. Would probably be a 90bhp one or maybe a 110 if you're lucky. I did 160 miles in my wifes 110 Tdi yesterday and averaged 62mpg at just under 60mph average speed. Pretty impressive stuff.

They're a great car, and would certainly recommend one.

Had it nine years now (got it at 60,000 miles); it's had an alternator, an alternator belt, two or three CV gaiters at MOT time and just the usual consumables. I'm pretty sure it's still on its original clutch

It's rusting around the arches, (started where the crap gets lodged between the body and the mudflaps), but mine seems worse than most in this respect. This may be related to the changeover to non solvent paints in '94 (my cars year) - I know a number of manufacturers initially had problems with poor paint adhesion at the time.

It's horrible to drive quickly so I don't, but if you need a practical, cheap Station car, it's great.

Not sure about the engines in the Mk4 - they went from 90 - 110 - 115 - 140 iirc. I think mine's the same as the earliest Mk4.

The old-shape Octavia TDi 110s are getting cheap now but they will still have plenty life left in them.

My old man has a 6-year old Octy 1.6i and it still looks mint, not a thread broken in the interior and goes very well.

I go with the 306 d tubo, golf gt tdi, or maybe even a Mk3 SEAT Ibiza TDI Sport.

you could probably pick up an audi A4 tdi for less than 3k, 100k miles (or even 130k) is nothing if the car has been well maintained.

You're driving it too gently then! Mine never got better than about 48mpg, more like 45-46 on average. Not really caning it, mixture of A roads (brisk but not likely to offend the police, or 45mph followed by overtaking people!) and motorway work (again, not dawdling, but unlikely to offend the police). HDi is a different matter, capable of quite a bit better economy than the old 1.9

after my wrx engine atarted knocke=ing and i sold it to a garage cheap, i went and picked up a little 106 diesel. its a 95 n-plate 1.5 escapade level two. sunroof etc, already a cd player and decent speakers in it. done 101,000 miles, two former lady owners. £795 i got it for. no rust what so ever, just really slow lol, but 58 mpg.

tbh i drive this like a nun...

I do about 300 miles a week just on motorway. If i'm lucky and the traffic is good we are never normally going above 65, just too busy. I tend to get between 45 and best 54mpg. If i boot it everywhere it drops a lot!

The saving in real terms between doing 45 & 50 mpg is small, and going for for 45+mpg would open up a wider choice of cars. If you're doing lots of miles I'd rather get 46mpg, have space & a decent amount of metal around me, than gain £10 per month. Hence I have a Passat 130tdi sport that does 46 mpg and pulls like a hooker on coke all for £5k. Don't be blinkered by one stat.
