AMG or Brabus
What's better the merc AMG SL55 or the Brabus version
Because the other day saw a gorgeous black brabus outside local pub and the owner was sat outside in the sun admiring it, then just at that moment a black AMG version rolled in, and the fella with the Brabus started to shift from admiration for his own motor to an angry look. This may have been for countless reasons. But was it because the AMG is better. And if so what's the difference betwen them?

Years ago some MB engineers felt that MB didn't build exciting enough cars so they went off and formed their own company called AMG (their initials) which tuned and fettled MB's to make them more interesting. Brabus started in a similar way. Not so long ago MB bought AMG to make it their own in-house tuning company similar to BMW Motorsport and Audi Quattro divisions. Brabus remains a private company.
Brabus cars are a lot rarer and seen as more exclusive than AMG. They're also a lot more expensive and tend to be a bit more extreme. Don't know why anyone with a Brabus would be jealous/envious of an AMG. When my Dad worked for MBs for years it was always the Brabus fettled cars that got the most attention/admiration when they came into a dealer or appeared at an MB event.

The new Brabus Rocket (in Evo this month), seems quite a special car.
I think it was over 2 tons but hit sixty in under 5 seconds and did over 200 mph.
Something like 750bhp and 800 lb/ft.
Also cost a lot more than the AMG cars too.

The story goes (a few year ago) that most of MB directors drove Brabus cars.
It all depends on how old the Brabus was. Years ago, nothing AMG produced could get anywhere near a Brabus car. Since then AMG have gone Power mad, and are producing 600bhp cars. The only way I could see the Brabus owner being jelous of the AMG car, is only if the Brabus car is older thus not as powerful or fast as the AMG car. plus he'd have paid more, alot mopre for his Brabus.
Brabus are fighting back though, and are now producing stupidly powerful cars (if they weren't already). If I was rich enough where money was no object, then I'd deffo have a Brabus over a AMG car anyday.
Mr. M. Schumacher has a Brabus M Class.

I dont know anything about these cars really but, it looked like it was a proper Brabus, brabus badge, quad exhausts, black wheels, looked meaner than the normal AMG. Both were convertable. Brabus bloke may have been upset because somebody had pulled up and stole some of his limelight sitting outside a pub on a busy road. Or could have been cos AMG man turned up with Brabus guy's daughter in his car.

The Brabus could have been just badges and styling. Like what many do with Schnitzer and BMW. As a result IMO the Schnitzer name is now chav. Too many cars running around with fake badges on.
The Brabus may have been a 350SL in disguise whilst the AMG was probably the real thing - i.e. the Brabus owner would have heard the AMG V8 rumble
All SLs are convertible BTW.

I'm a Merc technician. and personally I prefer the looks and philosophy of the AMG products (after all, the Zonda gets tuning mods by the AMG boys) but do love the mentallist attitude of the Brabus products.

The SL55 AMG is a fabulous peice of kit to drive. Propper grunt!
How that stacks to the Brabus version, I wouldn't know as I've only driven the SL55 AMG, but I wouldn't say no to either.

You can get AMG bodykits on none AMG's. Generally brabus are better than AMG, but AMG are phenomenal to begin with.
