Default M5 or HSV

Time has come to get rid of the scoob i think.....

I keep going back to my origional short list.

M5 or the Holden HSV

want to get something comfortable now, as motorway miles traveling home are looking long and imminent. need something fast still, big engined for cruising but still needs to pack a punch and sound nice. Oh, and must be something that every saxo wants to race lol

Has anyone on here oven either, or better still both, been mooching on the forums, obviously not the same following than that of the scoob so info is a little scarce....

I know the cost of ownership aint cheap, not to fussed about that at the moment.

But, are there any common faults on either of them?

there is a guy near me selling his

i think this was the car

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/images/64714-3.jpg

seen him at an american meet for the north east, got chatting to the guy, had nothing but prais for it. His only gipe was the fuel bill. Interior was a little cheap, but it was livable with IMO, compared to the scoob, its not exactly a step down lol. But TBH, the fuel aint going to be that different to the scoob.
£60 to fill, 250 miles to a ful tank, not good at all lol

is there much difference in performance between the 2, and what was the HSV like to drive, compared to the scoob? BTW, what scoob are you comparing that to, mines an MY05 WRX PPP

cheers

A few reasons I'd go for the M5 :

1) Build quality. Better than the HSV
2) Reliability. Would expect BMW to be more reliable
3) Servicing costs. Have heard BMW costs less than Renault (Renault are very expensive IMO for what they are)
4) Handling. The M5 has always had outstanding reviews for it's poise, grip, ride quality, handling, fun factor. Yet, still being a cruiser. HSV arn't as good in most of those aspects, from reviews I've read. Just lots of tyre smoke.
5) BMW M5's should be fully loaded so you'll get alot more kit for your money
6) M5's will/should always hold pretty good value.
7) The Holden is just a Vaxhaull in most peoples eyes these days.

On the plus side for the Holden though, is that it is still quite good looking (Silver one parked round the corner looks nice) and they are still very rare on our roads.

All in all, if it was my money, I'd go for the M5 for the reasons above. Again though, if it was my money, I'd probably go for a RS6 instead.

cant afford the RS6 though as thats what i would look at.

i have looked at the S4, but to be totally honest, the thing would do my head right in. The sheer amount of red lights in the cabin done my head in. It was at night and everything was just a red glow, didnt like it at all.

Thats the good thing about the scoob, it has very little inn the way of gadgets so there are not many lights to have light controls lol

budget would be up to 18K, may stretch that for a newer M5 though

Gents, all depends on how much your willing to spend. Cheaper M5's, around 10K - 15K, should be inspected careful, Mafs, vanos, difs all need to be checked as are faulty and will cost big ££££. Also, BMW labour rates are sky high.

Holden, dont know much about holdens, but have raced a few in my mkiv tt supra. Very impressed with performance, and in my experience, are faster than M5's.

Both nice cars, but if I was too pick, I wanted image + performance, then M5. If I wanted pure performance, too hel with image, then Holden.

Question you have to ask yourself is:-

Why do BMW want £1800 a year for an extended warranty on older M5's???

mmm, its a hard life out there

thats what put me off the M5 a bit, the HSV engine, from what i can gather is relativly simple compared to the M5 lump, plus parts will be more scarce.

im not going to kid myself, it will be driven hard, so things are going to wear out. Its the soundtrack of the 5.7 V8, its awsome

im really stuck, i think its time for a drive of them

Holden is cheap to work on yourself. Parts available from Oz very easily and cheaply.

I was able to pilot a supercharged HSV (Commodore) around RAF Marham the other day. Stonking amount of torque, fantastic soundtrack, but a bit boat like around the corners. But the handling can be impoved easily and cheaply.

I know SFA about M5s so I can offer no comparisons.

Lots of Badge snobs here then, I doubt an M5 is any more reliable than any other modern car and when they go wrong(and they do) it costs a shed load more than a HSV to fix. The M5 is probably marginally faster round a track or down a road but is it anymore fun? I seriously doubt it. Have you ever seen any roadtest of a "Vauxhall HSV" that suggested it anything other than a total laugh to drive. I managed to hire one for a week last time I was in Oz and it was brilliant fun. Hustled it down the Great Ocean Road and it seemed to handle pretty good to me, not as nimble as my Impreza but neither is an M5. Plus in the "Vauxhall" people will let you out of junctions.

Sold my M5 about 3 weeks ago, got an elise and an A6 TDI now.

The M5 was fantastic, it handled so well, especially considering how big it was, and it was very quick, it beat my 265bhp WRX blobeye hands down.
The biggest problem you will have is finding a good one. There are loads of ****e out there, and i came across a couple that had been clocked. My car had 86k on it when i bought it, but had a virtually perfect BMW service history that tied up between the book and BMW UK records (this a good check on the history of ythe car as BMW have every visit to a dealer on their central database). Also be prepared for some serious running costs. 26mpg on the motorway if you are very careful, down to 10mpg in rush hour traffic. On average i got about 16mpg between fill ups (about 250 miles per £70 tank). If you want to look after the car properly then servicing is a killer, even at a specialist like Thorney Motorsport. I only had one service done and that cost me £1700, although i did have a short shift added at the same time. My mate had his 2002 M3 done the week after, the car looked perfect but still cost him over a £1000, everything is very expensive!! The rear tyres are £280 each!

It sounds like i'm slating the car, but it really was an amazing car, the only reason i got rid of it was becuase i never used it because of the running costs!! I had a LPG granada as my high mile work car so i ended up using the M5 a toy in the end and only did 6k miles in 11 months, so decided to have a dedicated toy (elise) and a nice family car (A6) i could use to go to work in.

I was worried about missing the scoob, but to be honest i never did as the M5 was so much fun. It could also be terrifying, which to me is a good thing and kept my interest in it going

PM me if you want any advice
