Shame it's FUGLY!! Should be fantastic to drive, although at a hefty price.

Flippin eck, what a monster, I suspect it will be massively electronically reigned (I suppose they all are nowadays) in as I can imagine a small 300+ bhp RWD car in the wrong hands (i.e. a BMW owner) would be an absolute liability, imagine lending your 18 year old son or daughter that !
I remember old 204 bhp Cossies and the first 3 series diesels causing problems due to the ammount of power/torque they had, people died in Cosworth, Police Beemers got written off, nowadays we consider 204 bhp as pedestrian, have we got better at handling it, more used to it or do the electronics keep us out of the poop ?
They aint that ugly now the intial shock has worn off.

Tires are the most important factor.

Not in my opinion. Yes, tyres are as important as the other safety components, but consumer can't really change the electronics or strip the weight out.
(As a generalisation, because you'll get whinging pussies saying that they don't!) When a car needs tyres, suprisingly, the general public will stick the cheapest nastiest tyres back on. Kind of defeating the object of utilising the latest tyre technonlogy.......

Yep, I will never buy cheap nasty tyres again, my Fiat Coupe came with Nankang ****e on the front (Should have been a warning sign), it was dangerous, put some Continentals on and the transformation was unbeleiveable, was like going from 2wd to 4wd in terms of grip as the Nankang's had none at all.
However I dont think tyre technology on decent brands has changed that much, or has it ?

Done 5k miles in my 130i Msport now and its very quick (just a shame about the firm ride). I would love it to have 300+bhp - got to be a genuine 170mph car then (they are geared to 171mph at present but limited to 155).
The Hartge conversion from 265 to 300bhp is £8k, so I wonder what the base price will be for the 135ti? £29k I bet.

Typical BM M-sport. The suspension is so firm they are virtually useless on british roads, skittish and and uncomfortable. Agree tyre technology has really moved on over the last 10 years. Car electronics are virtually useless. If you really lose it at speed no way is the ESP,DSC etc going to keep you on the road. If youre going slow then sure, but why would you lose control at 30mph?
Wet road, cold tyres, thumping around a bend at a naughty 70mph or something, you lose it - youre heading for the nearest armco! DSC...lol.

Turbodan, the BMW 1 series is widely accepted in the motoring press as one of the best handling cars currently on sale... when I get through my first set of run flats I will be going for normal rubber to see if that improves things.
Having driven lots of modern cars at very high speeds on tracks all over the UK I can say that the leading brands all have very good stability systems. Porsche in particular stand out as being very good indeed. >100mph in the wet and the car is still very composed and PSM is still very quick to make corrections. I would challenge anyone to drive a lap in the wet in a 987 with the PSM off faster than with it on.
People automatically assume that stability systems dont work on the road, the problem is on the roads you quite quickly run out of space. If people are having accidents and blaming their stability systems for not working fast enough they need to look at their driving and take some further education.
In most cases the stability systems will give people a better chance of recovering from a skid or slide than without it, but you still have to accept the laws of physics.
