Avoid like the plague unless somebody else is paying the repair/diagnostic bills and supplying you with a decent courtesy car
Worst problem is melted and holed pistons requiring engine rebuilds/replacement...when this happens your nice "start-stop button" won't do anything...it'll just rev to distruction unless you put it in 6th gear and stall it. Also turbo failure is noted, this can also melt pistons and make the engine impossible to stop as the oil seals leak oil back into the inlet tract - often dealers will charge you for a new intercooler an pipework due to this.
And that's before you get to the electroncs. Traction/ABs, Aibags, climate...nothing seems to get away from suffering some idiotic glitch.
Seriously these cars amongst others in the Renault range of recent years are suffering some serious problem which both Renault France and UK aren't doing any effort in addressing.
Aside from that lot, they drive nice. Good performance, softish handling, and lots of toys and gadgets to play with.
....but...
You have been warned. Once, the most common car found in an independant garage was once the humble Rover, now the workshop is full of Renualts...Go figure!
The old 1990's Lagunas were much better - much less to go wrong on them - just had to scrap a 1.8 petrol - 200,000miles. The radiator exploded on the motorway last week, brown oil/coolant everywhere! As you can guess - head gasket has gone, it could be fixed, but its just not worth it. A stark contrast to a New 2.2dci that can't even manage 60K before blowing itself up or the electronics going loopy.

I think the case against the Laguna is pretty conclusive then!!
Driven the Mondeo TDCi Ghia 130... was nice but the looks are a bit bland altho most of the range i'm looking at are similar... hmmmm....

If you need interesting try an Alfa 156 2.4 JTD. Volvo engine's i believe, so they will be solid, and i would guess slightly more reliable than a laguna, and the prettiest of the sub £20k saloon cars???

The Mondeo is bland in comparison, but is better handling. Ford's diesel isn't as smooth in power deliver either, and I have found the turbo can be a bit laggy.
Vectra 1.9dti is also good and CDTI 3.0 V6 diesel is speed machine. But as per the Mondeo, both are bland and lack the interior toys
Honda Accord interior is a very nice place to be, but it fetches a premium and although it is a good diesel engine, it does seem to be a little down on power when compared to the competetion

I have a Diesel Laguna as a company car, thank **** only for 7 more weeks. I have had it for 3 years and I despise it.
Initially I loved it comfortable smooth ride for long journeys lots of toys and gadgets to play with and the push button start was kind of cool.
However, it is now at 80k miles on a 51 plate it is on its 3rd turbo !!! It eats driveshafts and track rod ends for breakfast and follows those up with a couple of front tyres. The alloys leak air so the bl00dy onboard computer is always telling me I have a flat or a puncture. One of my xenon headlights is out - £500 to put right as when the bulb went it burnt out the controller !!! The front seats have a silly little plastic triangle trim piece on the base that you sit on or it is between your legs so when you get out of the car it pulls off the seat and leaves a hole. The rear beam / axle mounts must be shot as recently it feels like I have rear wheel steering. . . . . . . other than that its a great car . . . . . 7 weeks and counting.
I am looking when I change to go for either an A4 avant, Passat Estate, or Mondeo estate. Needs to be diesel, and needs to be able to tow my track car.
Ian
P.S It feels good to vent my frustration about my chocolate laguna

Chris - erm NO
Shark Man - If this hadnt been a company car it would have been torched well before now. As long as the turbo holds for another 6 weeks and 6 days then thatll do me. However the sad thing is that some unsuspecting poor soul will probably buy this from whichever dealer I go to for my next car. I just hope they get some form of warranty.
