considering buying my mates unfinished project, the car has stood for 5 years, has a 1 off custom bodykit (tastfully done) and a 2.8 V6 engine from a 1978 granada.

im a bit put off by the automatic gearbox but im still interested in it for a bit of a project.

can anyone advise on what bhp ill get and what tuning options i have on this engine?

The engines basicly ****e mate, bin it atleast for the 24v cossy lump (can be bought for peanuts!)

Or go all out and yb it!

You are going to be lucky if that engines pushing out 130bhp now and the 2.8V6 didn't have much bottom end torque either.
Couple that to a Ford 3 speed auto and you have one dog of a car.

i fairly new to messing with cars to the extent of changing the engine etc, what kind of cash are we talking to buy+fit a new engine? also would a cossy engine mean converting to 4x4 (sorry if this is a daft question)

The 24V Cossie lump was basically a 2.9V6 Ford Cologne engine with Cosworth bits and 12V heads per bank, they are bigger than the standard 2.9 or 2.8 so may not be a straight swap, they pushed out nearly 200bhp when new and would need the later 4 speed auto.
The later standard Ford 2.9V6 had the same power output as the 2.8V6 but had 3 port heads and redesigned cams and breathing to give more torque over a much wider power band.

YB engine is the 2.0 litre 4 pot Cosworth lump from the Sierra.

With your lack of engineering background I'd stay well clear of this project.

i didnt plan on having to change the engine, but i dont think i should stay clear, i think i just need to do some research, find out what engine to buy and then get someone else to fit it .

It sounds as if the project could rapidly eat a lot of cash and then some more.

Swapping engines sounds easy but in reality is much harder and you can be plagued by problems. If you want to sleep easily at night, stay away, especially if the car belongs to a friend - the friendship may sour over problems that happen with the car.
