Cayman S test drive.

Cayman S test drive.
I have decided on a Cayman S to replace my WRX import MY96. After a 30 minute test drive last month I was convinced, so I ordered one for April next year.
Anyway the Porsche dealer in Aberdeen offered to lend me their demonstrator for the day. So on Wednesday I spent the day driving round my favourite roads here in the NE. This was the route - A93 to Dinnet - A97 to Donside - A944 to Colnabaichin - A939 to Ballater - B976 to Feughside - B974 over Cairn O'Mount - A90 back to Aberdeen.
It is a sensational car to drive on these empty hill roads. The handling is so neutral and the car is so planted, whatever the road conditions. And the amount of grip available has to be experienced to be believed. I don't regret placing an order. All I have to do is wait until next year.
And whatever anyone says, it is plenty quick enough. And it sounds pretty good when pressing on.
Here are a few pics.

Just came out of a 986 2.7. Tested the Cayman and its a very nice motor, I like the looks and I think its a car that always looks better in the flesh. Sounds brilliant too. I hear that a Cayman with a 2.7 engine has been tested and its meant to be going on sale next year. Price is going to be around 5k cheaper than the "S".

Must say it does look good in Blue.
I'm planning to get a 996 C4S after my scoob in a couple of years time. Depending on price of course, but I could easily see myself buying a fully specced second hand Cayman S instead. I'm pleased Porsche have built the Cayman, as I'm someone who although would like a Boxster for the driving dynamics, I couldn't see myself in a soft top. Now we have the best of both worlds.
Those alloys look fantastic as well.

Steve,
I've ordered Atlas Grey with black leather interior. It looks black until you see it next to a black car. Then in sunlight it has a bluish tint to it. The Cobalt Blue looks good in sunlight, but sometimes it has a reddish tinge that isn't so attractive. Also Porsche will charge you an extra 1,522 quid for it!!

I must get a test drive in one, as everyone who has driven one comment on just how sublime the handling is. Look much better in the flesh and for sure some of the colour options don't translate very well in photo's.

Nice one.
Never quite got over the engine in wrong place of the 911 and the limp looking (but cracking) Boxter.
Think a Cayman S is a strong possibility once the house's are sold, look great, glad to hear the handling is spot on (though if Dad gives me his 911, I would'nt say no).

Charles W,
Very nice choice. Fact is I havn't heard even 1 solitary negaive comment made about the Cayman. It would seem as if the overall package- build quality, dymanics, looks is as close to perfect for a road car as has yet been conceived. With that said...
Did you get a chance to drive it in the wet? As this is the only real area I can conceive where the Impreza would still have it, really would love to see a back to back of these two in the wet. JL

Jeremy,
I did drive it on some very wet roads after some heavy showers. I did not notice any wayward behaviour. Did you read Autocar's B-roads Baftas? They gave the nod to the Cayman over the rest. They said in the wet it was faster than the Audi RS4. I dear say the Impreza might feel safer in really atrocious conditions. Time will tell.

Hi
Out of interest - how much deposit did they require? - for a next April delivery!
It would give us a bit of time to save up for the balance!
Cheers!

Cracking looking car, only thing I don't like is the rear wiper, but I believe it's an option on these anyway? Who the hell would want to pay extra for something that spoils the lines of the car :O
I must admit when I first read the post I misread Cayman as Cayenne and nearly puked in my tea at the idea of someone describing such a horrendous looking tractor as a car, let alone a brilliant car

Great cars, but once you start adding options the price rockets!
EVERYTHING seems to be an extra - my mate is thinking of one, and despite a base price of £42k odd, he reckons it'll be £52k with the options he wants - and after having a play with the Porsche 'build-your-own' thing on their site, its easy to see how hes come to that.
Great cars tho - that is a hell of a jump from an old Impreza tho!!

Yep, i test drove one last week. As said above its very planted, and very posotive in the twisties. Although, not the fastest car ive ever driven, the whole package is just so complete. Yep, once ya start adding a few extras the price rockets, i was looking at a 3 month old example with just 575 miles on the clock, and priced at 48k, with 19s, sat nav, phone package, but alas no sports seats.
Cant decide what to do myself, as only having a drive to park it on, i wonder how appealing it would be to the thieves?
