Default Mk V Golf Gti

Quite fancy a new Golf but was wondering if there is a facelift due. Don't want to buy one then it changes the next month, I'd ask the dealer but they are useless ****s. So does anyone know?
Thanks.

No facelift imminent AFAIK. Wife is getting one in a week.

Still not many discounts - UK dealers will tell you no discount and 12 week wait. A broker managed 2.5% and 3 weeks for a UK supplied car.

Not enough discount on the EU imports to make it worth it IMHO.

Nice almost lag free engine. Bounces a bit when pushed - it isn't a Scooby. Interior reasonably screwed together, some of the centre console plastics are cheap compared with the Mk IV.

It is a nice "warm" do anything car, but not a serious performance proposition. As a private buy it seems to make good sense.

The Focus ST is just as good in many ways, looks a bit plasticky outside though, a bit too obvious.

There is one coming unfortunately:

http://www.channel4.com/4car/gallery...ift-feb06.html

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2565407 (March 2008, which seems mad, as the Mk5's only been out 2 minutes!)

I also saw a link somewhere else which stated that the Mk 5 production costs were higher than expected, which has brought fwd the mk 6 - most odd.

Mind you, replacement/refresh/facelift cycles are so short now, it's nothing more than a nasty marketing ploy to make people change their cars. The Mk5's are excellent - I'd probably just get one - if you're happy with it now, why would that change? (best thing is to avoid surfing the net once you've got it!!!)

Default I really like the look of the new GTI

I used to have a mkiv v6 4 motion and reliability was a nightmare. Any mk5 owners out there, are they leaps and bound better then the mkiv? If so the wife might be getting a test drive (quite fancy it myself to be honest).!

i've had my new gti for about a month and 900 miles, so no reliabilty issues thusfar. Although the centre console rattles and the seat frame squeaks a bit too much for my liking. Still a proper, proper car though.

I had a MKV GTI TDI before this and somehow it seemed better screwed together, but I'm putting the rattles down to the stiff ride on the 18" wheels.

Had our MKV GT TDi 140 for the past couple of months and we are very impressed, well screwed together and the DSG gearbox is awesome

Don't forget the MKV has been around for 2 years, so if it's getting replaced in 2008 then thats not bad.

Wait for the Civic typre R

As an Ex mk5 GTI owner I could never recomend one. Its the worst car I have ever owned. The Dealer had it more than I did.

they might say its due to high production costs, but i bet is down to the **** reliability and the high warranty costs.

Hasn't the MKV already been subject of a minor facelift?

Not a surprise to hear about your problems Wish, the Audi A3 on the same platform has similar problems.

Interesting mixed views....
My partner has a Mk4 Gti T, and couldn't agree more about lack of reliability and poor dealer support. Guess I was hoping things had improved on both counts!
Just getting over there Px offer! Well below trade!

MKV is even worse than the MKIV for reliability. There's a well documented problem with the steering rack 'groaning'. The dealer fix? Replace it with exactly the same item that will go faulty again. I guess the usual VAG plan will apply, it's cheaper to replace it under warranty a few times till it expires and then leave the owner shafted once out of warranty, than it is to redesign it.

This and the appalling dealers are the reasons why I won't ever buy a VW product again.

MKIV's problems are I suppose minor, coil packs, window drop, climate fan failure, rear wash wipe design flaw and the security flaw where you can just stick a screwdriver in the door lock, turn it and the windows drop and alarm deactivate.
MKV seems riddled with more serious faults and they feel cheap.

A friend of mine has one and apart from the side of his seat ripping (cloth seats) it seems fine...was even more fun when he got a 6 hour trial remap lol

Chris
Had mine for quite a few weeks now and think its a great car, far superior to my 2 previous mkiv's (even more so when you drive it)... Mines done 34k now and has had no real faults throughout its life..

Handles very well too (more Integra than Aerodeck like the mkiv!), and sounds nice, although admitedly another 50hp would makes things more interesting.

Add to that the electrical gremlins! i.e. Indicator relays etc
