Default Evo 5 buying advice

I`ve just sold my scoob and im after an Evo 5.
I`ve had 4 imprezas now and need a change for a while and the Evo is pretty much the only other affordable car I like.

So, I`ve got just over 9k for an Evo 5, but is it worth me saving enough for a cheap 6? is there really much difference?

Im after the 275bhp standard power, I like the fact the Evo is very tuneable, and im only doing 4000 miles per year as I have a company car too.

Im not a big trackday fan, im more of a 1/4 mile sprint addict now.

Has anyone ever owned a 5 on here and can give all the good and bad points, or even the reasons why I should get a 6 over the 5?

ta

Hi Cliff,

I owned an Evo 5 for over two years.

Its a must to ensure the AYC is working properly and has been serviced. Don't pay for someones poor maintenance. Over time dirt / grime will get into the plates and cause no end of bother when cornering.

Get someone with Evo knowledge to do an inspection.

Ensure the car has been serviced as per the schedule. EG every 4500 miles.

Look at the interior trim (seats) any car with over 50kmiles on the dial will have a bit of wear on the recaros. The grey weave begins to split

Try to get as standard car a possible. Exhaust, filter is fine. Anything more than ensure its backed up. I'm sure you know this already.

Make sure the IC spray bottly doesn't leak. After a spirited drive it can tend to off load the bottles contents at standstill.

As the brakes are brembos its going to cost you ££££ everytime they need changing. Despite many attempts to find pads that wouldn't squeel like a buses even at low speed I ended up with Brembo pads up front and lotus elise mintex at the rear.

Finally colours are only White, Yellow Silver and Black.

I've not seen recent pricing for a 5 in ages but between £9k & 10.5k should do it but if you were to look at a decent 6 circa £11K +should be your budget

These are not generic views just my recollection of looking and running one. My car was mega reliable and I even got 235 miles out of a tank of juice!!

Great Esh, that a good insight I was definitely looking for a nice blank canvas to work with, standard except for an Exhaust + filter possibly.
Do you know your average mpg with a mix of spirited, motorway and town driving? My scoob was always around 18-20mpg.

No idea of mpg. It was better at cruising though rather than town driving on account of a heavy clutch pedal.

Spirited driving was fantastic. I never feel as confident in my Subaru.

Exactly what I said. Ended up with the Brembo's at the front and mintex pads on the rear.

Also in this months Japanese Performance Car is an Evo buyers guide.
