Default BMW 530I

Hi All

Anyone had any driving experience of the BMW 530i face lift model 2000 onwards... I know it pumps out 231 BHP are there any issues to look out for etc....

I`ve got a `01 530i sport & it`s a great car Look out for the camshaft sensors failing, causes the car to stall under light throttle at low speed, about £60 each.
Have a look on http://www.bmwland.co.uk/talker/viewforum.php?f=5 or any other of the MANY BMW forums!

I have a 530ia sport Xplate. Good car, but it's in the BM garage because it stalled and my remote keys have stopped working. Other than that, great m-way car.

Around town about 21mpg - motorways around 27mpg at 80, alot lower at higher speeds which is a problem because in this car you dont know your doing the speeds as its so quiet and smooth

Had the car just under a year - the only thing ive spend money on is 2 rear tyres and a brake fluid change. Still have 2 green lights on and it was last serviced around 9000 miles ago so still have i reckon anothr 4-5000 left till it need servicng again

For my 530i sport auto I get between 24 & 32 mpg depending on driving conditions. Not too bad IMO for a big, heavy 3 litre automatic car.

Hope you don't think I'm hijacking your thread here RB5RLP, it may give you something else to consider.

What do people think about the 530d sport? Which one would you choose between the 530i and the 530d sports?

Either are likely to be my next choice of car so I'm interested on peoples opinions on this thread too

The 530d is also a cracker. I would personally choose this one if i was doing alot of motorway miles but beings as i dont it was the petrol all the way from me. The straight 6 is a beast and sounds so nice. Apparently they (whoever "they" are) reckon that its the best 6 pot ever made!!

Hint - when slowing from 70 ish, switch to steptronic and come down the gears at higher revs - a cracking engine note!!!

When I was looking for mine, sept last year, the D`s were about £3k more & according to a lot of people on the BMW sites weren`t as reliable as the petrol.

Thumbs up

I've done over 100K in my 528 (almost the same thing) auto in less than 3 years. My journeys invariably take me on fast A roads and motorways. I've never reset the computer and the figure over that time is 31.2 MPG. I've done actual checks from time to time and it's more or less spot on.

At 90 (indicated), the engine's doing a whisker under 3,000 r.p.m.

Cheers

Turbos are prone to failure. Make sure it's been changed or at least check the car's still in warranty.

The old man has a 530i SE Steptronic and gets early 30's sitting at 85-90 on the motorway. Its a good looking car on the 18" Sport Alloys and a really nice car to drive, very very smooth, pulls extremely well despite being heavy with "only" 231bhp.... very deceptive, you can be comfortably over 3 figures and not realise it.

Only problem that he has had is that there is a drain on the battery somewhere and BMW will charge near £100 an hour in labour, on a 4 hour diagnosis job which they won't guarantee will fix the problem.

Cheers,
Grant

Get a multimeter (<£5) and try and diagnose it yourself to save loads. Maybe it has a traffic master or tracker type device that's not used but still draining battery.

5 series is a brilliant car - I have an 03 Sport Touring which is the best all round car I have ever owned. It is a diesel so I cannot comment on performance or reliability of the petrol car.

In the 'real world' including the twisties it is a match for the 530I in terms of performance, it holds its value better and uses a lot less fuel so you might want to consider the 530d.
