Head gasket blown on Citroen Zx diesel - how much?
Hi All,
what should I pay for the above?
Blew at 70mph - nice! Total loss of power, steam and black smoke everywhere. Car won't run, engine just turns over but won't start, recovery guy reckons that it has failed badly as there is no compression (I'm a technical novice, so please excuse any bolloc*s I might be spouting!)
Not sure if there was some nasty knocking sounds as I coasted in also?
I think the heater matrix has failed over the past couple of weeks - could the two be inter-related?
Any advice/recommendations/price guides much appreciated,
Nev

are you sure it was the head gasket and not the cambelt gone..??? my rover 218, (same engine i think) did a cambelt, and it did exactly what you describe..... just do a quick check, pull the cover off and see if you still have a belt..... and when mine went, it snapped the camshaft in three pieces, and did more internal dmagae aswell..... so i binned the lump and got another...

that was my first thougt...recovery guy took cover off and the belt was still on - part of me wishes it had snapped - at least it would have made the fix/bin dilemma a little clearer.
It's an M reg with 77000 on the clock - only paid £200 for it 2 months ago, but have already spent £250 sticking new pads and diskds and a throttle cable on it.

If it's only done 77k, then it'd maybe be worth gettin it fixed.... but how many times do you say that before you right it off...???
Parts from say http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ should be no more than 50-80 quid.....

yeah, maybe. Garage has quoted me £350-400 for the job - not sure if this is a tad pricey - factor in the heater matrix, which I believe to be a dash out job and we could be talking mega bucks!

50 quid plus parts, thats a little optimistic !
I would suggest finding another ZX diesel and plundering anything worth keeping of the one with the knackered engine.

I did say in their spare time.... having done the head gasket on the second engine i got for my rover, i would say that assuming nothing else is wrong once the heads off, then a head off, clean-up, lap valves... to check that nowt's broke.. and refit should take no more than 4-5 hours..... i would be happy with 50 quid for a spare time job..... also worth doing an oil change and new coolant at the same time.....

it gets better!
Matrix has also blown - what with other jobs the garage has quoted near on £900!
Will definately be going to the srappy!
Thing is this will be the third time in 2 weeks I've seen the same scrap dealer: 1st time he gave me £25 for a knackered old Volvo, second time I paid him £40 to empty my shed....£25 for the ZX and I'm a tenner up Rodney!
Astute with cars I am not!
Either that or he will think I am some sort of super dealer who can acquire two cars for less than £50, flog them for scrap and turn a profit!!

Nev,
Should cost you around 400 to repair the head gasket, will include the cost of the skim, the heater matrix will cost about 200 if you know where to go, the part is cheap, around 40 quid, it takes about 4 hours to fit though as its a dash out job.
Where are you in the uk?
I take mine to www.pugbitz.com up in manchester which are a pretty decent place
Tony
PS just had the headgasket done on my 306td, 411 quid all in.

Decided to give up on it!
Just picked up a 1997 Pug 406 1.8LX for £700. Touch wood, it seems mint, even the air con appears to be working. 83K on the clock so should be good for a couple of years hopefully.
Anyone any idea of the fuel economy on these - I have heard that they can be a little thirsty?
Cheers,
Nev
