Default Peugeot 106 xsi

After about 9000 miles my daily runaround (£100 renault 5) is about to give up the ghost and i was thinking of getting something a bit nicer for the daily commute. I was thinking about a 106 XSi as the insurance isn't too much, does anyone know whats these are like to drive, reliability etc.

Cheers

Andy

I ran one for a good few years. Very good handling on them, the car peugeot built when the premiums had killed off the 205 gti and they spent the development cash on the handling setup instead. I managed to get a constant 40mpg off mine- even when lightly modded which they respond well to(chip filter and exhaust).

Power wise the 1.6's where I think 100hp (they where less hampered with emissions regs than the later vtr spec 1.6 engine) but with a bit more torque than the earlier 1.4s (which where 100hp pre cat and 95 after) however the gearing is longer and the car's a bit heavier.

There also quicker in reality than the figures peugeot gave (under quoted to help the insurance) - Car mag I think it was got one of the 1.4's to 60 in 8.9 seconds which is closer to how they feel to drive.

Reliability they are okay, no worse than one would expect for something that age. Watch out for any smells of coolant inside the car from the heater matrix leaking though- there a sod to fix if it goes.

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?

Reliability..

I fooked around 7 gearboxes, snapped off 3 lower arms and ripped the back wheel arch away from the boot floor.. but you really can make them corner with a decent suspension setup on them..

I had a 1.4 XSi for a few years, a fantastic little car which I wished I never got rid of tbh.

In someways I wouldn't mind a 106 GTi now, a nice cheap little runabout.

On the saxo it was -
1.6 8v for the VTR - 90 bhp
1.6 16v for the VTS - 110 bhp

IIRC

Saxo VTR were 90bhp or later 105bhp I think.

Saxo VTS were 120bhp. The VTS and 106 gti are practically the same car, they share the same engine and same chassis.

I had a 1992 1.4 XSi. It was a very good car, very go-kart like. I eventually put a 1.6 16v engine from the 106 gti in along with jenvey throttle bodies. It was a little beast once all that was done.

They can be picked up quite cheap now, you should be able to find one for about £800

they are both 8v, its the same 1.4 (1360cc) engine that was in the 205xs. Good little engines, mine had 165,000mls on it when i sold my 205 and it still ran like new.
