i need something to temporarily replace the scoob with... gonna have problems with running costs very soon...
so need something to replace it with...
has to be :
fun
(and therefore most likely RWD)
cheap to buy
easy to fix
and (most importantly) cheap to run!

any thoughts chaps?
was thinking old 318 - that sort of area...

As above,200 sx,been there done it before the scoob,great cars and easy to work on and so cheap now.

they are all 1.8 turbos right?
what are they like reliability wise?
and (dare i say it) fuel economy?

want something that isnt going to cause me too much hassle.

The S13 (hatchbacks) are 1.8 turbos. They have a rather high (?) final drive ratio which amounts for great acceleration and bad fuel economy. Not sure about the later S14 2.0 turbo coupes economy.

Very tuneable so maybe already been beyond its best time and not run slowly. Not really suitable for 4 adults IMHO.

200sx s13 standard are the best power for ££££ you can buy. i ran mine with 13psi boost decat 3" turbo to tailpipe , k+n , optimax and 15" alloys and it slaughtered civic type r , vectra gsi , vr6. just take your time and look for a good one. pulsar t25 garret fits and has potential for 250bhp. ND have been known to summon 300bhp+ reliably from the 1.8
or theres always its big sister the 300zx

PS i bought mine for £750 and hammered the **** out of it for a year with no problems at all

200sx, s13, are great cars but you will need to rebuild that bottom end. Most will be in poorish condition, so look carefully. S14a are cheap ish (£3500) for excellent cars.

Sierra XR4i...that is if you can find one that isn't trashed or with more holes in the chassis than swiss cheese.

Avoid the XR4x4 unless its mint (drivetrain doesn't take the age and abuse well)


And not to forget the senators little borther....Carlton 3000Gsi. A 2.8 Granny or Capri would do the job too.

Look at the old shape 5 series too (3 series BMW are always overpriced) . Can get some very nice 6-pot poverty spec ones for very little cash.


Afterthought: Only real issue on all of them is fuel consumption......So how about a 2.0 pinto engined Sierra? (not a CVH...pinto is far more perky and fun to drive)

Ford Capri 3.0 Special or 2.8i. Still a good looking car IMHO. My old man had load of these when I was young. The best one he ever had was the 3.0 Special in white with black roof. Had the uprated engine in it. Used to take me to Hamstely Forest in it to paint black lines down the quiet roads. Briliant.

He had a 2.8i for about 6 weeks till some tea leave stole it and wrote it off.

Wouldnt use the words cheap and 200sx in same sentence, firstly the engine would proably need some sort of work on it, just cause there isnt blu smoke pooring out of it doesnt mean that its in a1 condition, i had to shift mine after 10month due to engine begin to go and there wasnt any blu smoke or anythin. Handlin wise was fun but u have to be awake all times, u can loose the back end easily in the wet even though ur not going fast but i guess that other rwd cars suffer from that too. Good fun though all in all but can be an expensive pitfall.

i've had many an XR4x4.... in fact ive got one at the moment but that is SUPER bad when it comes to fuel economy... great fun to drive though, and sounds wicked too....

old shape 5 series... thats worth a look....

dunno if i could cope with another sierra, i've had about 5 in my time... getting bored of them! if there are any about that arent rusting in a scrappy that is!
