Default oil consumption. could be v expensive

Just topped up the soot montster.. another 1 litre

thats 2 litres now in approx 8000 miles...

i checked the hand book, and they reckon its perfectly acceptable to have consumtion of 1 litre per 1000km (627miles)

blimey if thats the case on 10,000 miles per anum thats £195 in oil, on top of the £42 to fill it inthe first place

and why is oil for petrol card sold in 5ltr cans but for diesels 4ltr, and most of them take 5ltr!!

I was told by the service department to keep an eye on the oil consumption on my new 535d, allegedly they can drink the stuff

You only need to worry when you can't turn the engine off...as it's running off the oil in the sump instead of the diesel

2 litres in 8K that's nothing. I've lost a sump full in the space of 10 miles

You may find it settles down after a while if its a new car, if its alreadydone some mileage then its probably a feature.

My Fiat Coupe was getting through a litre every 100 miles, was wierd, no smoke, no oily smell, no puddles, it just went ?

Try giving it a right good caning, it will help seat the rings in the bores and may reduce oil consumption if the bores have got a bit glazed through gently use.

A litre in 4K miles is nowt though, the old 16V Golf GTis and Merc in-line 24V sizes would do a litre in under a 1000 miles and "they all do that sir"

If you change the oil every 3000 miles as a powerful and very good engine deserves, it will last a very long time and you wont notice the oil consumption anyway.

It can be disconcerting when you take the keys out and the b*stard thing keeps revving in nuts off, isnt it? (5th gear and a lot of footbrake usually kills it though; if it doesnt eat itself whilst you look on...)

I have a Golf TDI 190,000 miles uses about 1 litre every 10,000 miles

Every car handbook state 1 litre per 100km, standard get out clause for manufacures when the engine is knacked and they dont want to replace it under warranty.

30 years ago engine might have been like that but not now, unless the rings, bores or valves are knacked.

2 litres in 8000miles would be 2.5 litres in 10000miles.

If it's £42 to fill it to start with, assuming 5 Litres (for the sake of maths) what oil are you buying that works out at £195 per 2.5litres

Or...

Are you doing 240K miles a year to use say 6.5 £30 5Litre containers of oil. (don't buy iit in 1Litre bottles ffs )
