Yes, I know someone who has one. It was on the front of one of the VW mags recently. Its a red one. Its almost 100% standard, in nice condition. What do you want to know?

I personally love these cars. The weak link is the charger which can let go above 40K. Best to get one that has had a charger rebuild at some point.

Oh, and the left-hand drive can make overtaking.......ahem.....interesting!!

Great looking cars, and not a lot of people know what they are! I nearly bought one back in 1997 but went for the 'safe' option of an 8v Mk2 GTI instead.

They aren't really much faster than the Mk2 16v as the additional 21 bhp doesn't really offset the additional weight and losses through the 4wd system.

As has been said, the G60 charger isn't renowned for its consistent reliability. VW doesn't recognise them as being a servicable part, but thankfully there are many specialists who can rebuild them and modify them to help improve some of the design flaws. Alternatively the ubiquitous VAG 1.8 litre 20v turbo (Audi TT, MkIV GTI, etc.) engine is a popular swap.

There are still some good, standard cars about at reasonable prices. I'd still like to own one! www.clubgti.com/forum is useful for more info.

There was also a G60 GTi. Looks like a standard Mk2 GTi only subtle differences but with the G Lader engine. Toppers, came as three and five door. Very good Recaro interior, i think it was called "Croma Glass" too, BBS alloys, flooring the loud pedal in any gear would mean torque all the way through. But, lhd only

Surely though you could just fit a smaller pulley to the supercharger and get another 25% or so in power ?

I drove a Fiat Barchetta for a year or so (LHD) - its eally no problems once you get used to it.

Also, my brother in law has a golf rallye. If I'm honest, I'm not overly enamoured by it.....I've got an original 1990 article on it if you woudl like me to scan it in (from car magazine, Rallye vs Integrale)

Car park ticket barriers are; and toll booths are a b*stard too. You can get around that using a disabled persons 'picker-upper' though. Overtaking in a LHD car is quite safe so long as you drive correctly; learning to drive correctly can prove difficult for some people though..........

I ran a 400bhp vette for 18 months. Was brilliant car but like others have said you have to be switched on. It also helps if you have a good passenger who knows what they are doing. I did not have any problems but I read on the C5 forum of a few people who crashed. My advice is to take it very easy for the first few weeks. After that you will adjust quickly. I drove my C5 as a weekend car so it took me about a month to get into it, but after that all was fine. It was just odd getting back into my normal car after a weekend of LHD..

Think you're confusing the GTI G60 with the Edition One package there.

They sold a standard 3 and 5 door GTI G60 available in FWD or the Syncro 4WD. (With Syncro this was basically a plain-clothes Rallye!) As you say, these were LHD only.

There was also a special trim package available on the continent consisting of a blue Recaro interior, blue carpets, metallic Chromalux glass (rear sides and rear screen), choice of 3 paint colours (black, grey or aubergine), BBS RM split rim wheels and a 'nice' sticker on the bonnet. This was available across the 8v, 16v and G60 GTIs AFAIK.

But yeah, there are some G60s out there with the Edition One package. (One for sale here!)

Get an Integrale instead :0)

VW pulled the plug on the Rallye for serious competition use because they realised it was underpowered and too porky. It only competed in a couple of national rallies (and didn't do very well).

LHD is absolutely fine. On bendy roads, it actually opens up as many overtaking opportunities (which other drivers can't see) as it conceals. It's only ever a problem if you're stuck behind a truck or caravan without a navigator to spot for you. And pulling out left from junctions can be a pain. But it really isn't the big deal people make it out to be. I actually prefer changing gear with my right hand!

IIRC, the limited edition one had a blue stripe round the grill instead of a red one, and the only incarnation of the 16v G60, with I think 210bhp

Aye, that was the Golf Limited - 16v G60, 209PS and 4wd in a 5-door, small bumpered body with a single headlamp, blue-striped grille and subtle blue 'VW Motorsport' badging. They only built 71 of them. More info here.

They did actually build 2 x 16v G60 Corrados too, one with 4wd!

Feel heavy and underpowered (brother in laws has lariy cams, chip and pulley as well). It just feels like a heavy GTi.

I dont think it helps I cant help thinking 'Should have bought a grale' every time I get into it.
