Old git in 205???
Hi everyone.
Heres the thing.
Im after a car for the winter to get to work etc.
What i need is opinions on a pug 205 GTI and my age.
Being 36 years old will i be frowned upon as an old aged boy racer trying to relive his youth??
I can always go for a boring Vauxhall but would rather have something a bit more enjoyable and a 205 would fit the bill.
i've been twoing and throwing with the idea all weekend so need some sort of decision!!!
Please tell me your thoughts on the above as its driving me nuts!!
Cheers

Get one. Honestly.
My mate has just done it, (from an Integerale Evo) still looks standard apart from uprated suspension, 306 gti brakes, new bushes etc.
Had a drive of it again the other day. That car is THE best car ever.
So alive. Wants to be driven. Got in and hammered it to the limit straight away. No familiarisation required. You just know where the limit is. Also when I had my 1.9 new (14 yrs ago) i was only young, and lift off oversteer was something to be wary of. Now with more experience, it's something to exploit!
Parts are dirt cheap on ebay. Peanuts to run. Just make sure it's tidy & original and you wont be called a chav!
A bit plasticky inside and it doesn't even seem that fast anymore, but if I could buy a new one now I would!

plenty of us in their 30's and drive 205s In my opinion their not a ageist car, i.e. you dont lok out of place at any age in a 205, as long as you can get in and out without the need of help

I have one (track 1.9gti) and i love it. On the track in the dry it will keep up with a standard scoob, in the wet it's an animal. Such a laught. Brings a smile to my face everytime i start it up! Checked out a '98 Wagon today... so luxurious by comparison!
They are a drivers car. Full stop. Everyone should have one just once, to realise how special they are.

You better hurry up and buy one before you turn 40 and desire Jags and Merc, well worth trying even if you don't like. Most 25-40 year old blokes have driven a 205 at some stage of their life, most have positive memories unless they own a VW and will give you respect for your decision, they've moved on to Scooby/Evo/M3s but still look back with twinkle in their eye.
Most boy racers have Saxo/Clio/Scooby now, a 205 is too high maintenance and is too old for them
You will be surprised by the attention you get if its a clean, shiny standard 1.9 more so than any modern hairdresser cars
They are a hoot to drive, but were designed over 20 years ago, don't expect luxuries/refinement although perfectly comfortable, they're charm is in their simplicity, its just a go-kart with a shell.
You get 90% of the fun but at a fifth of the cost compared to better/newer cars

I turn 40 next year.
Bought a 205 to get to work and back after a bit of time deciding what to get.nearly spent a bit more on a 306 GTI 6 ,which is also a great car,but pretty refined and almost a classic but not a 205which is becoming a classic!! ,the 205 is such fun to drive, and really is quite cheap to run,and can be taken to the odd track day for even more fun.
If tall check you can sit in car with crash helmet if car has sun roof I can only just manage it.
If you do get one you will always drive the twisty way home.
I do not care what people think.
Most car buffs love it and come over for a chat.

Best cars I ever owned, by far, 205 1.9's.
None of the integrales, AMG's, Exiges, Cups or others I ve had ever match it for sheer fun. Every corner is an event involving throw-in oversteer with step onit throttle to pull the car through nicely. You can make the things literally dance.
Also they really show up the biggest problem with modern cars: W E I G H T.

Mines now for sale though, if you're interested. It's a 1988 1.9 GTI, red, 115k, MOT'd last week, new discs + pads, new battery, nice interior, mint original wheels, runs ok. Idles a bit crap but good when you get it going. Totally standard apart from a backbox and air filter.. Very straight for its age. Could do with a tiny little bit of tidying up (i.e a good t-cut), but still looks the business. Open to offers.
