Are we talking a single trip or a tank full?
Had a weekend away using my Wifes Fabia 1.9TDi and averaged 68mpg, usually it does around 48mpg but it's main use is short around town journeys. The fuel computer in the Fabia is just about spot on.
My Octavia's fuel computer does over read a few percent but I've hit 80mpg+ a few times while driving my "A" road route to work at 5am. The Octy has a 12gallon tank and I always refuel when the light comes on with 2 gallons left. So I have a 10 gallon working range and I can easily break 600miles to the tank unless I get tied up in town centres. My Octavia is currently running 140bhp and 200lbft as well.
A few owners say you can crack 700miles from the Octavia but I haven't managed it yet.
It's best on semi-busy A roads, keeping up with traffic flow at 50-60mph means around 1700-2000rpm which is smack on for maximum torque meaning you can leave the car in top gear and just tickle the accelerator.
VAG diesel engined cars don't seem to bad at matching manufacturers claimed figures. A bit of a different story with some other manufacturers
Cheers

spot on its a VW based engine
seat toledo 1.9tdi
best for a full tank was 660 miles. if i drive at 56mph i,ll get av 60mpg
if i drop lower it goes up, the 76 was when we were on a very long 40 section...
if however i cruise for 11-12 miles and then have to drop the speed the figure goes up to the 70,s
i dont know how vw manage it,

37 in my Almera GTi then 33 when I drove as Nissan intended Doesn't seem bad though - I only ever had 31 from the Impreza GL 1.8 I used to have, even when driving like a granny

Struggled to get more than low 20's from the Scoob which is why my petrol guzzlers have become weekend and track day toys.
To be honest I find modern TDi's are more suited to UK roads than highly strung petrol engines. Lots of torque low down at the bottom of the rev range where you spend 99% of the time but with plenty of grunt for overtaking or powering out of bends.

Passat PD130 sport (6-speed box) -- averaged 48mpg from new, now 32,000 miles up. Best-ever tankful -- 53mpg brim to brim (Manchester to Plymouth & back and the fuel light didn't come on!). The trip computer gave a 66mph journey average

Worst fuel consumption ever........my first proper car, Mk1 Astra GTE
Based on my fuel expenses claim, was called into see the MD, he calculated I was getting about 12mpg, in fact he suggested I get an XJS V12 as it might give better fuel consumption.
From there on in, I checked my fuel expenses a little better

I've hit 50.4mpg in my Mk2 Golf Gti 8v while trying my best to get to the Shell garage on fumes! (using Optimax), not bad for a 15 year old gti
Usually average about 38/39mpg with it even with a heavy right foor

Can get 60 mpg on average going to work every day in the Fabia vRS........when pressing on ahem....its more like 45-48 mpg .......
Both figures are great....I am very happy as I see a petrol stations once every 2 weeks........instead of once or more a week! I also don't have to worry about finding a Shell garage that sells Optimax
Yep I love derve!

My old Citroen C3 would average 55mpg in driving in London, and the best I ever got was an actual 72mpg out of a full tank, not just what was shown on a trip computer.
I now have a Fabia VRS, and on the first tank I got 48mpg, but that included a bit of testing on a private test track when I gave up at an indicated 135mph....
