Default Low depreciation cars? Sub £25k mark....

Perhaps I'm wanting the world, but I need to find a plush motor, that isnt going to depreciate too badly over a year.....£3k is the most I am willing to lose......(I can hear you all chuckling already!)

Cars Ive been looking at are:

BMW m3(e46)..can be picked up for about £24k......but I fear it'll only be worth about £17k in year....

Audi a4 convertible 3.0.....I can get a friends car off him for £19k (02 reg, 34k, FASH)........I reckon this may be worth about £17k in years time....

BMW m5 (e39).....found a nice 2000 W, 60k, FBMWSH, and all important extended warranty for £19k...but I think it'll be worth about £14k in a year....

Porsche 996......around the £30k mark for a clean T plater........but I reckon it'll only be worth £25k next year.....

Can you guys give me some ideas of other cars that meet my criteria, as you can see that most of the cars Im looking at dont meet my own criteria!

Ideally Im after a german car, but Im open to ideas...

I don't agree with that, not a £5k loss in 12 months.

Anyway, everyone knows that cars are not investments. It's just a fact of life that all cars depreciate over time. I think you will struggle to find one to meet your ctiteria..best bite the bullet and get a used M5

I'm not chuckling at losing £3k a year, not at all. It is interesting from the research you've done the various amounts each will lose in the next year. I'm puzzled though why the E39 M5 would lose 25% of it value in a year when it is already 5 years old? New model has a waiting list and is in a completely different market.

Porsche 968. 15k for a good one and won't lose much if anything (apart from dealer losses if you do that route).

UR Quattro? even with some miles it shouldn't lose a great deal.

Not too sure about that......they have already gone sub £20k for imported cars...which IMHO will pull down UK prices....and (again IMHO) nissans never retain value well.....look at the 200sx's...they are worth nowt!

As for my calculations on the M%, they are simply my guesstimates....for the m5 I looked at the e36 M3, the way it reached its 5 year mark, got replaced with a new model, and rapidly became a bargain basement car......I fear the mighty e39 m5 will go the same way.....

Rolls, Bentley, Aston, Ferrari will be depreciation busters. Not cheap to run but you didn't say if that's a problem

Running costs are not a major issue......but Im after a car that is relatively newish(ie 5 years or younger)..................I think I'd struggle somewhat to find one of the above within my modest budget!

3k a year seems pretty high to me - or am I naieve? I'd expect a 3+ year old car not to depreciate madly, although I guess it depends on the purchase price! fairly sure my (then 4 year old) saab hasn't depreciated by 3k / year as by now I'd be paying someone quite a lot to have it!

What about a 4 year old Elise.. perhaps not what you're looking at, but I'm figuring about 2k depreciation / year (hopefully less, but I'm being pessimistic), and a 16k purchase price?

NSX is a good suggestion, even the first models hold there money really well, and now they have ceased production I can see the prices going up more.

BMW Z4 2.5 SE -
I bought 04 plate in July 04 for £24000 from main dealer
Part exed in May 2005 for £21000
If I could have been arsed to sell privately I would have got my money back.
It was £32,000 new with all the options, and then the guy who bought it decided he didnt like it and chopped it in after a month for a 5 series.

I dont think even the early 2.2 models have gone below £20k yet. These were £24k and now 2 years old - thus I would have thought as rock solid as you would get.

Dunno if 2 seats is your bag though?

Is this yours? or one you used to have? nice car , the pic in the post I did was the one we used to have until Nov 04.

There 2 raw for some but certainly as Evo mag said, one of the best handling front wheel drive cars about. Far superior to the newer Civic type R

what about a GT3200 - lost most of its money and you can buy one for under 20K with less than 30k on the clock

Elise is a good option. RX8's also holding their value well - they are in the top 10 least depreciating cars (for new cars anyway).

Errrrrr, if you read the original post. He wanted a £25k car that wouldn't depreciate much. Tell me of one used ferrari or aston at £25k that's gonna lose £30k a year
