dare I say it???.................Vauxhall Astra
After a few changes at work I've had to re-think my new car plans and am now looking at one of the new Astras. Narrowing my choice down to:
5-door hatch/estate SRI 2.0 Turbo 200ps (extra pack)
SRi sport hatch 2.0 turbo 170 ps
I did look at the VXR (240ps) and although it looks like a stonking piece of kit I think it would place me in the same predicament as many of you Impreza drivers - i.e. I'd be too worried about getting it nicked (or me getting nicked for speeding)
Anyone got any experience of any of the above yet as I have a 1.6 Sxi sport hatch on the 3 day test at the end of the month to check for interior space etc and then a test drive in a 2.0 turbo 5-door to check performance .

Haven't driven any of the new astras, but I did have a 2.0 turbo astra coupe (Y plate) for 12 months.
It wasn't a bad car, but had too much power for front wheel drive; it struggled a bit, and especially so if the road was anything wetter than damp.
Oh, and the suspension was a bit crashy.
John.

Dont worry so much about the BHP, look more at the torque figure and where its developed, my 150 bhp Saab is really torquey, its like a diesel so it feels quicker than the power figure suggests, basically the more powerful models produce more hp but in normal day to day driving the dont feel that much faster, should imagine the Vauxhalls are similar .
